I cannot wait...PIT is going to be a great addition to WN...This will be the 59th city that southwest will be serving...Since IAH is out of the picture, it would have been number 60... Sad...

My bets are on DEN! As crazy and unlikely I would put a lot of money on it at this point. The Mayor of Denver has confirmed that he has talked to WN to negotiate service. Usally when the aviation department turns it over to the mayor its more of a welcoming party, so DEN and WN friends again!

I will also say that I have done my part by booking my friends on WN out of DEN connecting on ATA!!

Up to six destinations? My guesses are...

Hartford/Springfield or Providence
Manchester
Kansas City
Raleigh/Durham
Chicago Midway
Houston Hobby

Future cities to follow:
Hartford/Springfield or Providence
Tampa
Orlando
New Orleans

Anybody have any insight?

Also, will Kelly fly in on a Southwest charter or what airline would he be taking into Pittsburgh.

Not too sure about the prospect of Denver....

FLL is always gettin forgetten about by Southwest so I wouldn't count on it! They had big plans down here but never went through with them! They should be forced to give up 2 of there numberous gates to jetblue and let them expand here since they actually want to. Glad to see most of the new cities get service out west by southwest! But FLL gets squat from them.
717, 727, 731, 732, 733, 734, 735, 73G, 738, 752, 753, 762, 763, 777, DC9, MD80, DC10, L1011, ERJ, CRJ, ATR, DH8, A300,

Top O & D markets from PIT that WN serves: (2003 DOT stats)

market / daily r/t pax / # of flights I think they'll START with

MCO 942 3
ORD/MDW 907 4
LAS 866 1
LAX 646 0 - they rarely start a flight like this
TPA 497 2
PHX 497 1
PHL 463 3

other notable markets/numbers:

SEA 391
FLL 382
HOU/IAH 335
SAN 322
PBI 189
MCI 167
MSY 148
BDL 140
STL 135
JAX 133
DTW 129
RDU 129
PVD 118
MHT 98
BNA 94
IND 81
PDX 79
ALB 79
SLC 78
ABQ 74
SAT 70
BWI 68
ORF 68

If you add the DCA/IAD O & D to BWI, it would equate to 233 - still fairly low!

If you add the BOS O & D to PVD, it would be 580
If you add the BOS O & D to MHT, it would be 560

PVD & MHT will be next if not part of the initial start-up schedule.

If WN doesn't add FLL service from PIT; maybe FL will. The same could be said about PIT-PHL service. I'm surprised that FL hasn't yet re-introduced the service after receiving word that WN was coming.

I forgot about the gate issue in PHL with WN. If WN cannot support PHL-PIT flights right away I say PVD & MHT get 2 PIT flights each. BWI could see 2 flights as well just as a way to get PIT pax to other WN cities via BWI.

There is no gate issue in PHL yet. WN got another 2 gates for a total of 6 gates for only 41 or so flts. They have room to expand for now.

With the upcoming expansion that will take place at PHL's Terminal E; WN will have 8 gates over there once the project is completed (which should be by Fall 2006). Whether they will keep gates D2 & D4 once the E expansion is open remains to be seen.

Do you think WN will take advantage of the open hangers and 737 mechanics at PIT? Could WN make PIT a maintenance base since the airport is set up for it?

Didn't they just buy a hanger at MDW from ATA? They may not need more hangers, although the PIT facilities are nice.

My guesses would be:

PHL
BNA
MDW
PVD
MCO
TPA
PHX (maybe)

Agree with PVD757, that it will probably not BWI initially, Washington is not as high on the list of O&D markets from PIT as many of the other markets.

Mostly because fares are incredibly high. The majority of travelers between Pittsburgh and the DC area drive, and WN service to BWI, while probably not making a major difference, can't hurt.

These are my best educated guesses:

MDW x4
PHL x4 (cheapest fare is $244/rt and US has monopoly)
BWI x3 (for conx to FL and NE)
MCO x2
PHX (for conx out west)
LAS

PHL x4 (cheapest fare is $244/rt and US has monopoly)

For that big of a monopoly, that isn't that bad of a fare. It could be a lot worse.

So let's say they start with 15 flights to 6 cities...here are my guesses

PHL: 4X daily
MDW: 4X daily
BNA: 3X daily
TPA: 2X daily
MCO: 2X daily
LAS: 1X daily
NEXT FLIGHT: FLL-ATL-HPN on FL

Assuming 14 initial flights from PIT, they will be to:

MDW x 6
PVD or MHT x 3
ISP x 2
TPA, MCO, LAS one each

my bets are on:

PHX-best for connex to las/lax area
MDW-no brainer in my eyes
BWI-BWI great for FL connex
PHL-Since WN like to compete head 2 head w/ US
PVD-again, US dominates that market (WN seems to like PVD over MHT)
MCI-WN makes alot of connex there, great for all west coast cities
MCO-they'll probably start with a SAT only

LAX-1x

SOAC,

Keep in mind, that $244 listed above is the cheapest fare. That fare may have so many restrictions or conditions through the wazoo, that the actual fare on an itinerary that fits most people's needs & schedules could be very well indeed be higher.

For a cheap monopoly fare: one time I booked a r/t PHL-PIT itinerary on US for $136. This trip was booked and taken well after FL dropped their PHL-PIT service.

Well I personally cannot wait for a PHL service. As a student a Pitt, paying $300 to fly home just isn't in my price range, and greyhound gets old real fast.

Even though BWI is not top O/D, there are many Pittsburghers now living in this area....and lots of connex through BWI. I would be absolutely stunned if BWI isn't on the list of startup destinations from PIT.

Decman,

You may need to write letters to both FL and WN requesting PHL-PIT service. The airline that adds it first gets your business.

7E72004 (are you going to change your username to 7872004?),

FL did offer r/t PHL-PIT service from about July 2001 to April 2002. They started w/4 r/t flights but then cut down to 2 in Nov. 2001 (I guess due to the downturn following 9/11). Unfortunately, with US' frequency, customer loyalty (which still existed there back then... little did PIT people know what would happen about 2 years later) along with their matching or beating FL's fares at the time; all FL's presence wound up doing was filling US planes. Both US' and FL's PHL-PIT r/t planes were packed during the weekend of the Patriots/Steelers AFC face-off back in 2002.

US was somewhat stronger and had not yet entered Chapter 11; so as a result, FL dropped the service. I, for one, was not too pleased of FL's decision because I utilized FL's PHL-PIT flights a couple times during early 2002.

However, that was then; this is now. With US being weaker along with its downgrading of its PIT operations; FL could reintroduce some of the routes it dropped when it first came to PIT. FL once offered PIT-MDW and PIT-LGA services too. FL has re-introduced services and routes many times before; after a 5-year hiatus, it revived PHL-BOS service a year before WN came to PHL. FL also came and left TOL 2 or 3 times.

Based on what "normally" happend with new cities in this area, here are what I feel to be the most likley destinations:

All recent additions have started with:

BWI - 3-4 Daily
LAS/PHX (at least one, mabye both) 1 Daily
MCO/TPA (at least one, mabye both) 1 Daily

Also expect to see:

PHL...if we really are trying to put the last nail in US's coffin, why not one of their signature routes at 1/4 the cost? 3-4 Daily
MDW...6 more gates won't go unused. 3-4 Daily

Possibilities:

HOU
BNA
STL/MCI
LAX

DC
Aircraft Flown: SF3 DH8 DH4 328 ERJ CRJ CR7 CR9 E70 E75 D9S M80 712 72S 732 733 734 735 73G 738 739 739ER 752 318 319 32

What I would like to see......

MDW - connections west
PHX - connections west
LAS - connections west
BUR - pipe dream I know. would be happy with connects thru above.
PHL - faster than the train, beats the hell out of the drive.

Im quite happy with FL for travel southbound but BWI service for southbound connections would be a nice alternative to ATL.

BWI

chicago is one of the most contested markets in pittsburgh with american, united (now using occasional 757's), usairways, and ata all vying for a piece of the action. I think providence is the strongest candidate because of the lack of new england service compitition from other carriers. Philadelphia is another market that has a US stranglehold on, and i wouldn't be surprised if that was added to the system as well. I know airtran tried a few years ago and ended up pulling out of the route, but that was when US was a much stronger beast, with a much larger PIT presence.

in addition the service from pit to the west coast is pretty uncontested. i think this is where southwest stands to make the most impact. the only carriers flying out that way from pit are usairways, united (2x daily denver), and america west (2x daily to phoenix). i looked at the loads and both the united and america west flights are consistently full.

I could see a PIT-STL for connections to the West as well. Connectin in STL is so much easier then MCI/BNA/ or even LIT. Plus the O and D is good for PIT-STL alone, and US Airways has a monopoly on it as well. So SWA could help lower fares too. If not for the intial start up it wouldnt surprise me for the next round of additional cities.

Here is my guess for the start (7 markets)....
MHT or PVD-Boston market
BWI-DC market/hub
PHL-new hub and competes w/ US Airways  Wink/being sarcastic
MCO-they always start a new city with flights to Orlando
MDW-hub and ties into ATA
LAS-major hub & they always start a new city with a flight(s) to Vegas
PHX-major hub & they always start a new city with a flight(s) to Phoenix

Then the next wave may be.....
ISP
BDL
RDU
TPA
FLL
DTW
IND
BNA
MCI
HOU
LAX
OAK
SLC (maybe)
MSY (this ones for you MSYtristar!)

I would not count on BWI. We are not able to keep the ramp staffed properly for the current number of flights. We are hearing that growth is on hold even with the new terminal that is tentatively scheduled to open May 2nd until the ramp can hire and keep staff.

I don't see DTW-PIT happening. WN has not added routes to DTW ages. Plus NW and US already serve this route well. The O&D has got to be rather low since it can be more worthwhile to drive between the two markets. Not that WN wouldn't serve it, but there are just many better markets to serve from PIT and it isn't going to during into a large operation overnight. You'd see service to either BWI or PHL on WN from DTW long before you'd see PIT.
