1 Year Anniversary Of A Record-Breaking Flight

Fri Feb 04, 2005 8:11 am

Today is the one-year anniversary of the world becoming a smaller place with the introduction of Singapore Airlines nonstop service between Los Angeles and Singapore using the Airbus 340-500. While so-called competitor aircraft are still idled in the hangar, the SQ 345s have flown thousands of passengers in high comfort on a route once believe impossible to travel without stopping.

I've had the distinct honor of flying the LAX-SIN service last March, and look forward to flying the even longer EWR-SIN next month, which will undoubtedly be a pleasure.

Ironic, this will more than likely also mark the year SQ replaces the aircraft that did all of this.

Gotta love that  Big thumbs up

Flew LAX-SIN last March also. Most comfortable, quietest, smoothest flight I have ever been on. Plus 18k ff miles to boot. I would fly it again on the drop of a hat if we print in Singapore again this year. I've got to say I don't look forward to the change of equip., there's just something about the 345s that's really cool. I know the 777s will be able (theoretically) to handle more cargo and pax (hence more revenue) but...

Just came back from EWR-SIN(SQ21) yesterday. According to the cockpoit...SQ will review to exercise all the 5 A345 they had optioned due to the fact that the B777LR will only comes in by the year 2007/8. There will be expansion on the ULH sectors very soon if airbus is able to deliver the aircrafts on time. Well sit back and wait for some great news.

Just to clairfy post 4. Rumor has it, that management doesn't want to buy the remaining 5 aircraft, since they are not planned to be in service for that long a period of time. What they are trying to do is to have a leasing company take delivery of the aircraft, then SQ would lease the aircraft until SQ can rationalize their ULR fleet.

The ULR flights are doing very well and SQ would like to add a second EWR flight as well as another city. They need the capacity now not in 2007.

Sleep, hopefully brought plenty of books, music, whatever. Maybe write letters, play games or do work on a laptop (if the person has one).. If a kid, keep asking "Are we there yet" or "How much longer"

I think it would have been wonderful if Boeing had the 777-200LR ready on that anniversary. It would have been a great way to show up Airbus.
