Actually the SA
service did last quite long, at least for 20 years or so. It operated in Luxair colours for a company called Luxavia, and had a (low cost?) niche in the Europe-SA market, a bit similar to the FI
flights from LUX
to the USA.
Before the 747SP it was a 707, and at some point an AB3. I think they all stopeed in NBO on their way to S Africa.
Since then LG
has not ventured into longhaul anymore, with the exception of a leased 767 from CityBird that operated LUX
for a brief period of time after FI
's withdrawal from LUX
. As far as I remember it was a miserable failure and was stopped after just one or two schedule cycles.
