Seems like boeing is doing great business the last couple of weeks...

Spike, I suspect if ET had gone with the A350 you would be saying it's money well spent, won't you?

Has Ethiopian taken delivery of all it's 767's?

The article I read said that the first 787 will arrive in 2008. Will they be replacing 767's or operating both for a while?

Excellent news. The 787 is proving it's market appeal on a broad basis now. If Im not mistaken it is now officially the most successful new product launch for Boeing.

Sweet, another order for the 787. It's been picking up some needed sales momentum lately. Ethiopian has been a loyal customer for Boeing since their first 720Bs, and is one of Africa's most successful airlines, so it's a good sale.

To those that slight Ethiopian as an airline indicative of it's third world status...you are sadly mistaken! Ethiopian does not need any foreign aid for it's airline, (my understanding is US and UN foreign aid cannot go to airlines).
Ethiopian makes a good profit from their operations based on the following
1) Little or no competition in their markets.
2) Reasonably low operating+labor costs.
3) High Yield fares and they make a ton of money in excess bagage charges from virtually every passenger, (I have seen all the cash at the end of the night).

Furthermore Ethiopian has excellent maintenance support for their and other operations, (they are an FAA approved repair station)

Is Ethiopian Airlines privately run or state run???

Who knows.. Maybe they need more fuel efficient planes that are more comfortable to bring more aid workers to Ethiopia at a lower cost...

One word = HATERS!
Their are many airlines in "Extreme Poverty etc.." type countries who's airlines fly a very modern fleet and continue to order new aircraft, the argument could be made about them as well. That is just the way things are....

Let's stick to the order guys, great news for Boeing and Ethiopian!

Ethiopian flies B767 today right? (Yes Spike, Ethiopians have airplanes even today) It's not surprising that they would want to replace them at some point.

Good news indeed for Boeing and Ethiopian. I guess these will replace the old 763's, while the options will replace the new/757's?

As the 787 carries more freight, then for Spike maybe it will deliver more food from supporting countries. So could be a good move nespa?

N79969: Ethiopians have always had airplanes. But you are missing the point. If ET can afford 10 of these, why can UA/AA/DL/CO not muster one order between them? I would call that emarrasing.

CO did order 10 in December. The US Airlines are in considerably worse shape than ET. ET is not exposed to the market forces that US majors are exposed to (i.e. LCC, high labor costs, post 9/11-SARS fallout). That's why they have a hard time finding money. ET AFAIK has been turning a profit and should be able to finance the purchase more easily than US Airlines.

Spike,

I do not mean to be rude but to be extremely blunt, you have no point.

The state of the incredibly massive U.S. airline industry has no bearing on the decisions of a small carrier on Africa that need to replace a handful of B767 airplanes. I am sure that some legit businessman in Ethiopia has a 40 inch flat screen LCD television while I watch TV on 19" tube. I see no immorality or unbelievable contradiction.

I think my point is more realistic than yours so don't be so blunt. Its 10x 787s to Eithiopia v. 0x 787s to America.

It is sure going to make BA buy the 787 to catch up with ET. Widest windows in the world to see the poorest nation. Makes sense to you?

Spike it isn't ralistic because you're ignoring the market foirces that the ET operates vs. the market forces that US majors operate in. There is significantly more risk in the US market thus financing new aircraft purchases i nthe US will entail higher risk for the finance company whereas the risk in Ethiopia is totaly different as well as probably very low. This allows ET to get favorable financing for the 787s vs. the US major carriers.

Not to mention that two US carriers are in bankrptcy, one more is teetering (sp?) on the verge on ch. 11 and the other three (AA/CO/NW) are better off, they're still hemorraging cash!

Lastly ET is ordering 5 787 (with 5 more on option), CO has ordered 10 787s (0 options). You're last post was completely wrong on that account.

And actually, there are 30 787s ordered by U.S. operators. Though like I've said repeatedly, I think Primaris is a proxy for one of the other U.S. majors. Look at who runs Primaris.

Spike, I'm sure the only reason why ET chose the 787 was due to the bigger-than-normal windows and not due to the 20% in operating savings that the aircraft will bring to them.

Spike et al bashers,

I guess the fact that ET is a profitable airline and is operating a modern fleet has nothing to do with it.

When was the last time any foreign aid went to ET?

ET is profitable and they can purchase planes on their own.

Spike,

No you still have no point of any real import. Your attempt at reflection is one of those bits of trivia that may seem profound after 8 or 9 beers-- but with the return of sobriety and basic reasoning skills, one quickly realizes it is not symbolic of anything or that Ethiopian airlines will have a 7E7 before United or Delta.

I doubt that the planning department of "World's favourite [sic] airline" is sweating about delivery slots after Ethiopian trumped them.

Why should Ethiopian have to wait until UA or DL or anyone else gets their financial house in order before they buy an airplane? An airplane that is actually pretty reasonably priced apparently.
