That plane is old and creaky...it really does not reflect well on JAL. Going down to MNL it was an old and creaky B747 with the small upper-deck and that was bad enough, but the DC10....that was real bad.
I guess MNL is not highly valued by JAL and that's why they use the planes that are due to be scrapped.... Next time I'll take PAL.
I flew on one this summer from Beijing to Tokyo, and had no complaints. Although it was not as quiet as a more modern aircraft, I found it to have more legroom, and a smooth flight. I felt it was nice to fly on a -10 before it will be retired for good.
I would also love to get another chance to fly on a DC10 again. My first interconti trip as kid was on a PR DC10 when I was 4 years old (I still have some memories though). Back in '83 they flew from AMS via FCO, ATH and BAH to BKK. Then on to MNL and down to SYD. Geeh, that was an awesome trip.
Have been on NW and HA DC10s too. I just love that wonderful trijet. I also loved the L1011s (I have only flown it on DL). On the TriStars I really liked the lav-arrangement in the back. Five Lavs - that was pretty cool. You didn't have to wait that long. Those classics simply cannot be compared to A330s/A340s/767s/777s - they were much more elegant and seemed to have their own personality.
However, the only downpart about getting on a DC10 again (I probably won't) is that most them probably won't have the improved seats, IFE and other ammenities the newer jets in the fleets all have. That's too bad...
I have also flown JAl's DC-10 between HKG-FUK several year ago. I must say that I have to agree with Snoopy, because this particular DC-10 was so old and so worn, and was making kind of a strange noise! ( I have flown many times on DC-10's), so I know this aircraft type well. Again when you fly JL, you do have some expectations, with my respect to the DC-10.
My 'last' DC-10 flight was in October from Dhaka to Hong Kong. I expect that Biman will still be flying theirs for a few years yet. You can probably get spares pretty cheaply from the Mohave now. Will JAL have an official last flight of their DC-10?
Why the hate of the MD80? I admit they aren't as appealing to the eye as a 747 or 738 but they are a workhorse and a pretty damn good plane.
I love the DC10. I love flying to Brazil on VG. That MD11 is so sweet. Powerful and more comfortable and quiet than the 767!
>>i dont like the md-80 because the ones i have been on are trashed out, small, cramped, smelly, and loud. there are nice ones out there but if you are out of dfw and aa is only nonstop you can count on a crappy plane.
If Continental had a hub at DFW with nonstop flights I would always fly them, unfortunantely good things take time.
I was afraid of seeing a post about this. In March, I wll be connecting to JAL's NRT-MNL flight on a DC-10 from CO's IAH-NRT flight on a 777. Should be a very interesting comparison. I'll definitely have to remember to compare window size between the two.
Does anyone know the average age of JAL's DC-10 fleet?
Real smart post Snoopy. In my opinion, the idea of web sites like Airliners.net is to preserve and enjoy aviation. The thrill of going to the airport to watch wonderful aircraft like the 727's, DC-10's & L1011's, etc. is all but gone. Do any of you really get a thrill out watching A320 after 737 after A320? If the DC-10 bothers you that much, go find another hobby like collecting software!
People love to bust the champ in the chops every chance they get....especially when he's down.
Get used to it.....those well built MD's will be flying long after those tincan competitors are reduced to scrap. Still see DC-8's daily flying overhead and will for years to come (and the DC-8 doesn't even have slats for goodness sake ) Gotta love MD!!!!!!!
Crownvic and COAMig29...I enjoy aircraft just like anyone else. I'm quite happy to donate to preserve historic aircraft. You'll see a photo I put on here of a DC-3 that I saw in New Zealand. Thoroughly enjoyed seeing it and would give an arm and a leg to fly in one.
That doesn't mean when I am flying on business and I pay good money to fly business class, I have to like being stuck in a plane that is almost 30 years old (!) when the competition is flying a spanking brand new A340 (and please don't go on about A vs B - I wouldn't care if it was a B777). The fact is, from an airline marketing point of view, it just doesn't cut the mustard...
The sad thing was that when I got off the plane at NRT, there were a whole row of JAL DC-10s ready to operate the late night flights to Hawaii. Now that's a deterrent if ever there was one.
This forum is for exchanging views by aviation enthusiasts, airline staff and hey, why not, passengers too. If everyone agreed on everything this place would die...and the last thing we need is the "thought police" like you guys. Do me a favour....grow up will you?
I recently flew on a 747classic on JL. The seats were new but the lavatories/signage were still vintage 70s. Leg room wasn't bad. Since there is no PTVs in econ, there's no IFE box that restricts leg room like in the 763ERs.
Unfortunately, the DC-10 is catching up to the sign-of-times. The 763ER & 772, at least for JL, are just much more efficient. At least FedEx's 10s will be flying for a long-long time.
JL's remaining fleet of DC-10 should be within the 25-30 year old range.
