XNA And FAY

Sun Feb 06, 2005 7:26 pm

I was incredibly confused today when I noticed that NW Arkansas airport and Fayetteville Airport were not one in the same. Why are there two regional airports so close together? and why in the world will SLC have nonstop service to XNA?

FAY is Fayetteville, NC
XNA is Northwest Arkansas Regional

XNA is a joint military/civilian airfield that were combined together. In doing so they closed (to air carrier traffic at least) the old commercial airport that XNA replaced...

XNA is home to a sizeable cachement area and is the home of (the HQ of) Walmart (business travel)

I guess I could be wrong but I thought that XNA was a civilian only airport purpose built for easy air travel access for Walmart employees. Sam and Alice Walton were instrumental in the creation of it. For more info go to http://www.nwara.com/about/history.asp

I've flown in there many times and have yet to see a military aircraft or facility.

Perhaps you meant FAY?

XNA, I am quite sure is civilian only. You may be thinking of FSM which is home of the 188th ANG squadron known as the Razorbacks.

Drake field in Fayetteville which used to be the Commerical airport now has no airline traffic. It is the location of some Charter carriers and some flight schools plus there is an aviation museum there.

That is correct. XNA does not have any military traffic. Its largest non-airline client is Tyson Chicken (which houses its aviation department there).

Realistically Northwest Arkansas needed a better airport. Not only in terms of facilities (runway legnth, approaches, etc...) But also geographically.

XNA is now equally accessable to Fayetteville and the growing areas of Bentonville, Rogers, Springdale, and the sprawling Bella-Vista Village Golf Community.

SLC1,
XNA replaced FYV (Fayetteville-Drake Field) as the air carrier field in that region, as M27 correctly pinted out. Relative to SLC-XNA, this route replaced DL's XNA-DFW services, and will retain connections to the Rocky Mountain and West Coast regions for DL travelers to/from the XNA area.

By the way both FedEx and UPS still fly into Fayetteville, not XNA.

XNA is a unique airport. Tiny little airport in the middle-of-nowhere with nonstops to:

- Los Angeles (via AA MD88s)
- New York (EWR on CoEx & LGA on AA Eagle)
- Cincinnati (Comair/ASA)
- Atlanta (Comair/ASA)
- Houston (CoEx)
- Cleveland (CoEx)
- Dallas (AA Eagle)
- Chicago (Skywest)
- Denver (Skywest)
- Detroit (Pinnacle/Mesaba)
- Memphis (Pinnacle/Mesaba and NWA DC9-30s)
- Minneapolis (Pinnacle/Mesaba)
- St. Louis (Trans-States)
- Salt Lake City (Skywest)
- and Charlotte (Mesa dba US Airways Express)

It's a BIG BIG BIG business market.

Other airports in the vicinty with airline service include: Springfield/Branson, MO, Hot Springs, AR, and Tulsa, OK.

AirwaysDC9,

Just some corrections for the AA service into XNA..

The XNA-LAX is American Eagle and XNA-DFW/ORD is a mix of Eagle and mainline.

Don't mean to be nitpicky, but I believe LAX is served by American Eagle CRJ-700s from XNA and DFW has some MD-80s along with Eagle.

XNA serves the growing Northwest Arkansas area, home to Wal-mart which brings about a lot of corporate travel like suppliers. Being a big business market and having no discount carriers probably make it a hot market since the yields would probably be pretty good.

I wonder if JFK-XNA would ever be a B6 route with the 190's? Think that could work with 2x daily?

Adding to what was said above XNA is not just for Wal-Mart employees, there are also other large companies in XNA, there is also Tyson Chicken and JB Hunt Trucking just to name a few so Wal-Mart is not the only reason. Also XNA serves basically all of Northern Arkansas, Bentonville, Fayetteville and other Northern Arkansas Cities.

Sorry about that. I assumed it would be the 88 going to LAX. Didn't realize that the CR7 had the range.

Interestingly, right up the road from XNA is KROG. It is a general aviation airport, but it is the second busiest airport in the state of Arkansas in terms of # of operations.

No. Business travelers aren't going to JFK, and AA already has a lucrative corporate travel contract with Wal*Mart.

The bad people at WalMart and the hormone pumpers at Tyson.

You assumed that a plane AA does not have would be going to LAX???? Also, XNA-LAX is less than 1200nm, so the plane has plenty of range

I guess my question is though, if XNA is so big, why does FAY still have service?

FAY is Fayetteville, North Carolina. Not to be confused with Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Wal-Mart is not the only reason

You're right. Many companies have large operations in the area -- people have mentioned JB Hunt, Tyson Chicken, etc. In addition, many Wal-Mart suppliers have set up offices there to be closer to Wal-Mart HQ.

Does anyone remember when Scheduled Skyways flew Metroliners NONSTOP from FYV all the way to Springdale!! I was amazed that the Swearingens had that much range! I mean that is a segment about 10 miles long.

And don't forget folks going to or from The University of Arkansas. That must draw a few pax.
