FLL Observations

Mon Feb 07, 2005 6:00 am

I was at FLL today picking up some relatives and doing a practice run for next months jetBlue trip.
The relative arrived on CO 1401 at 2:19pm (21 mins early!) from EWR on a 737-800. Not sure about the N number, bit I tihnk it was N2180 or something like that.

A few notes:
-I saw 2 jetBlue planes. N590JB (Liberty Blue) and N594JB...both in a new scheme, but I don't think it is the newest. What is the name of N594?
-I saw a Spirit MD80 do some major banking on approach. It was something I can't really explain, but it looked horrible, almost like it would crash into T2, and it was somethnig I had never seen before nor want to see again. Everyone was ok, though.
-TSA agents now have to screen all wheelchairs. These wheelchairs are handled by airline personel and not left out of sight at all times, yet the TSA had to get gloves on and check each one. Unnecessary security if you ask me. Screen that while one can just stand outside and feesibly shoot a gun at the terminal or aircraft. Worry about the wheelchairs! There were other things too that I noticed, but I'll keep it to myself.
One other thing though was that an obviously mentally challenged man asked the TSA lady at the do not enter sign to help and she could not leave her post. She stopped him forcefully when he tried to approach her. That could have been handled differently.

-The rent-a-car garage is now open and shuttles leave every few minutes...1 for each concourse. Very nice! However, I noticed that Hertz and Budget were still using their remote facilities.

Also, I did see the Focus Air plane...it's awesome. And I saw that 727 without the engines. There were a few other things that I forgot but will probably remember soon and I'll post it as soon as I remember.

I told u I'd remember a few more things.

1) Where did Westjet go? Their ticket counters are gone.
2) the jetBlue from LGA came in FULL again, as well as the CO from EWR. How do they do it on SUPER BOWL SUNDAY???? Every jetBlue flight I've seen has been full! I think that NYC flights were never full in the DLX days. Until B6 moved in most people from NYC used AA to FLL or MIA or DL to FLL, but now capacity in the market has more than doubled and the flights are full to the brim.

3) Another positive to CO, priority actually meant something. The first cart or 2 of bags had an elite sticker on them. Props to CO for that.

4) I saw the F9 Dolphin plane, parked at B8...nice aircraft. Also saw the Star Allience 757, another CO 738, 2 AC, 1 FL, another US, some props and lears, some CO Connections, a couple of song, 2 Chataquaua, and 2 DL 764s. Skyservice also made an appearence, and WN had the largest presence. A NW A320 also paid us a visit.
THAT'S IT!

Not that normaly post what I see at FLL, but....

I was filling out some paperwork at US Airways before I start on the 14th, as I was walking out there was a US Air Express CRJ200 pulling into the gate. Can't wait till I get to work around the EMB170. When do they become regulars at FLL? I remember reading when but cant remember.

Dude you saw a lot of things. I saw an md80 come in too high for landing and the plane looked like it was going down as he tried to level again.

It was probably just an S-Turn maneuver for spacing...There may have been an a/c on the departure roll that began late, so the S-Turns allow for a little more time before touchdown to prevent a runway incursion.

Westjet's still flying to FLL so I'm not sure where the check-in counters went.

Maybe moved to a different terminal or being used by a different airline at the time?

Hey guys,

to add to this list of "observations", let me point out the Lowa Ltd.'s Boeing 707-330B (N88ZL) arrived at FLL from LEMG around 2:45PM today and has since departed for SAT...just my $.02!! Smile

Does anyone know why some of the intl flights are parking on the north side, near were the Southwest planes park?

Not long ago I saw Skyservice and Westjet parked there. Now today I saw a US Airways plane parked where the international flights usually parked. Sorry I don't know the name/number of the terminals at FLL. I have been to FLL very few times this year but found that swap in parking locations strange.

The LOWA ltd 707 came in, went into the terminal and eventually left later. That plane is quite noisy and smoky  Smile awesome sight! Near the terminal where it was parked there were 2 Air Jamaica A320s with engines covered and the paint on them looked quite faded.

Another interesting plane that came in was a Kalitta Charters 727. It didn't have any windows, so must be cargo. Almost forgot, the Air Atlanta 747 was there too, far away from the terminals though, but it's visible from the viewing park.

YOU ASKED: Does anyone know why some of the intl flights are parking on the north side, near were the Southwest planes park?

Many of the Canadian Airlines use Terminal 1, Concourse B (where Southwest's gates are). Those flying in from Toronto, Montreal, or Calgary sometimes do not need to pass through US Customs, as they already clear US customs in their respective countries. I believe Wesjet, Skyservice, and Canjet charters use Terminal 1. This is the same reason why Bahamas Air is able to use Terminal 3, Concourse E.

YOU NOTED: Now today I saw a US Airways plane parked where the international flights usually parked.

US Airways does/will begin to fly to multiple Caribbean destinations out of FLL. Arrivals must disembark at Terminal 4 and proceed through the US Customs facility. The plane is usually towed back to Terminal 3, Concourse E for its next scheduled departure. American follows the same procedure for its flights to PAP.

thanks Ece441 Big grin

Yes I noticed a few months ago AA's 737s parking there.

Speaking of observations, I don't know if this qualifies as an 'interesting observation' but everytime I drive through the perimeter road from Griffin there is a Kingfisher bird perched on the fence always in the same spot too..

I'm not a superstitious person or anything but I think it's a notable coincidence  Big thumbs up

I can't say for sure, but my guess is that bird is on lookout to warn of any Miami-Dade Airport Authority Personnel who may be trying to land jobs at Fort Lauderdale.
