Expansion Day For US In MSY

Mon Feb 07, 2005 1:12 pm

Well today was the day of the US Airways expansion down here. It basically consisted of the addition of two more daily flights (one more PHL and one more LGA), the start of daily A321 service to Charlotte, and the expansion (once again) to a 3rd jetway. US has been operating out of just two for the past couple of months, as the airport has turned its former US Airways Express gates (A2 and A4) into a large taxi cab waiting area. Now US has gates A6/7/8. The airline is hiring some ramp staff down here. No word yet on any CSA hirings. Here's a general rundown of of US operations here:

Charlotte (5 nonstops, A319/320/321)
New York/LGA (2 nonstops, A319)
Philadelphia (5 nonstops, A319/320)
Pittsburgh (1 nonstop, A319)
Washington/DCA (3 nonstops, A319/320)

US Airways has now tied Delta (who would have thought that?) with each offering 16 mainline flights a day from here. Delta of course had the advantage equipment-wise.

It's nice to see that the airline can be successful somewhere, even if it is not one of its target markets.

... and they re-entered Key West today, 3 daily CRJs to FLL. Most of the flights went out near capacity, inbound flight loads were *ok* but nothing spectacular (never is on a Sunday..)

AA on May 5th has

8 daily DFW
2 daily STL (one of which is eagle)
3 daily ORD
3 daily MIA
1 daily LGA
1 daily BOS

So thats 17 mainline departures, one eagle. Appears to have US and DL beat.

SegmentKing, is it still the case in EYW that the summer months are the slow months? I was there in June '99 and it was packed of course, but we kept on hearing that it was not the peak season. I suppose this time of year is the most popular.

Ejmmsu, CO usually has 17 or 18 dailies from here depending on the day of the week. They are generally the 2nd busiest carrier down here. In the late mornings and afternoons they have a decent looking operation going on with all three jetways occupied and an ERJ sandwhiched in between somewhere.

And WN has 56/day and F9 1/ day.

How busy is UA down there in that part of the world?
And what ever became of that 'Louisiana Air' or whatever it was called? Did it ever start up?

SprxUSA, F9 is running 2/day until 5/22/05. Then they go back to 1 for some reason. Lack of demand surely isn't it. No one here has quite figured that move out yet, but of well, F9's loss is UA's gain.

UA (mainline, Express, and Ted) currently offers 14 flights per day. Nonstops are flows to ORD, DEN, IAD, LAX, and SFO. Mainline is a mix of 733/735/319/320 and 752's on weekends usually. United Express has a lone CRJ and two daily EMB-170 flights.

CO usually has 17 or 18 dailies from here depending on the day of the week.

Frequency-wise of course. DL is still a solid #2 in capacity, despite having killed so many routes here over the years.

I did see noticed today while flying home to Philly from Mardi Gras that US had more flights from when I got in on Saturday. That day I only saw 1 flight at there gates. Today, there were 2 at the gate and 1 taxiing out for takeoff.

One a side note I was glad to get to be on a canyon blue 737-700 w/winglets on the 3 flights I made on this trip.

Love New Orleans!!

I'm making my annual May trip (3rd year in a row) early May this year, once again on US Airways...inbound from CLT in the morning, out to PIT that night, both on 319s. Nice to see US back at A7...last time I was at MSY on US (my trip last year was on AA), there was quite a bunch of activity in the morning, with departures to PHL, CLT, and DCA. Plus, you can't really beat Concourse A for security (only NW and US there...sure beats waiting in line at Concourse C...)
