64 More Firm Confirmations For The 787 By Summer!?

Mon Feb 07, 2005 2:03 pm

we have been speculating how many more orders and/or confirmations Boeing will see soon....given from what is said in the text...any guesses as to who will order (or firm) up what?

That being said, anyone believe there are going to be more potential orders to bring it over 250?

"The time for aircraft sales is a "complicated, long process," says 787 Program Manager Mike Bair. "The Chinese are wonderful negotiators and they're very patient." He says Boeing is holding commitments for 250 787s even though it has made public only 186. The others are awaiting announcement decisions by carriers."

250 orders by mid-2005 seems more conservative than 200 by year-end 2004.

The surprise for me (perhaps I just hadn't been paying attention) was that the wingspan for the B787-8/9 has been increased to 197 feet. That means each wing will be less than one foot shorter than those of the B777-200ER. Could the wingspan increase have been made in preparation for an eventual B787-10 to replace the B777-200ER?

The wingspan increase is interesting. I was wondering if they did it because they needed to improve performance, or whether they found it was a more optimal configuration, or was it something they did to make a future stretch easier.

Does anyone know yet the expected fuel capacity of a B787-8/9?

It won't replace the 777-200er or won't be a direct competitor due to the pax capacity. As far as I knew the 787-900 was going to have a lower 200's range...but obviously they haven't frozen the design yet so who knows. Maybe concordeboy could speculate on (if any) intrusion on the 777's market share is possible.

OK, whether you use 191 or 250 orders+commitments, the 787 is the fastest-selling Boeing airliner ever during upon launch. I'm guessing this also tops any airliner Airbus has ever pitched. Does it also ring true for other airliners?

It sounds like the 787-8/9 wingspan increase is prepping for a high capacity 787. I won't be surprised if we see Boeig increase the seating to 280-290 for the -9 and get orders for this plane from Qatar, Emirates and possible Ethiad.

I certainly think that Boeing will have close to 300 commitments by the end of the year. Once they've freezed the design and produced a few more prototype test sections of the fuselage, as well as demonstrated more clearly that their vision will lead to greater profitability then we could really see an influx of orders. It will also help if they could point to data tha tshows that the 787 will be mroe economical that the 350 thus blunting whatever edge Airbus had late last year when the announced the 350.

will they keep the "new" nose and dolphin fin on the 787 or will it look more like the 777??

I think that will still see the shark or dolphin fin on the tail but we may even see the whale fin!!  Laugh out loud

I think the nose design has been firmed and that Boeing is finishing up more test for the tail config. They'll firm that up in the next couple of months probably but all the concept drawing are still showing the "shark/dolphin/whale" fin config.

What´s the difference between "firm confirmations", commitments, "preliminary agreement", "purchase rights" and agreements(source:boeing)?
How many are really ordered?

Maddy:

56 signed, announced orders. (firm confirmations)
135 unsigned, announced orders. (announced commitments)
59 unsigned, unannounced orders. (unannounced commitments)

Purchase rights == options, for which there are at least 101.

Boeing has also received several hundred refundable deposits which airlines paid to reserve a production slot. Boeing's 200-sales-in-2004 was based on their assessment of how quickly they could convert these reservations into genuine orders. Obviously, the process took longer than expected, but it's likely that Boeing still has many additional reservation deposits over and above the 250 commitments that Mike Bair mentioned.

My money is on SQ order being announced @ Le Bourget this year. Also watch out for Emirates... though this will be a close call with A350 being available.

And to all people putting down A350... just wait and see when it comes out. It will give Boeing more headache than you can imagine... just wait and see...
