More Daytona (DAB) Fun W/ 764's

Mon Feb 07, 2005 2:47 pm

Monday Daytona is gonna be getting 3 Delta 764s.

Arriving @ 10am, 11am and noon.

Departing @ noon, 1pm and 2pm.

The 1pm departure will be Delta Flight 9801, the standard flight # for the Patriots Charters. So, I'm guessing the superbowl champs will be on board.

Anyone interested in a little DAB picture making? .. anyone want a print of these rare traffic movements?  Big grin

I was out on Midway for about an hour and saw the first one leave... The 764 parked at the international terminal is DL9801 that you thought was the Patriot plane... I saw a bus cruise by on Midway with a sign saying "Patriot Family and Players" so I would definitely say its them...

BTW talk about Daytona-Hartsfield Jackson International.... There were 4 DL planes in town at once...

The real reason why they flew our of DAB is because Rick is a patriots fan who used to work Ops at DAB up till a few weeks ago and could have gone right up to the plane, but instead, Im in Atlanta now doing consulting and decided to rub it in my face!

Hey all,

I'm up working in the airport administrative offices as we speak.

Delta's N840MH is parked here at the International Terminal, I assume that is the aircraft the Patriots are flying out on.

I cannot see which aircraft is parked here at the gate, but it sure looks much nicer than the MD-88s and CRJs we normally see in Delta colors!

Hope you get some nice shots, Adam...

Still wondering why DAB vs. JAX. We're the Pats staying away from Jacksonville proper on purpose. That's the only reason I could understand.

They sure don't need the extra 500ft. of runway at DAB.

I was out in Orlando watching the Superbowl on TV yesterday and just got back around 1:45. I saw two 764s at DAB when I drove by, one was at the domestic terminal and the other at the International Terminal.

There was a thing on the Channel 13 News (Orlando) today showing the Patriots getting their equipment loaded up about the time I left Orlando. When I got to DAB, it was still there. I assume Patriots were parked at International Terminal to keep away from everyone else since it is rarely used other than those Vintage Kingair flights to Bahamas. I assume it was the Patriots plane that left at 2:30. Only one 764 took off over my place.

There is a Transmeridian 757 coming back this evening too.

The final 767-400er, N838MH, just departed. I'm mad, I had my camera ready out on the balcony here in the admin offices, and just as I hit the shutter, the battery died.... Oh well.

Nice to see DAB getting a lot of the JAX overflow. I know how busy we can get in the 24 hours after a Super Bowl, it can get some hectic. I imagine the JAX checkpoints are swamped today.

Someone had told me that the Pats were staying in St. Augustine and that it was somehow easier to fly out of DAB rather than JAX... I guess since there is less traffic (aviation and car-wise) they can keep a lower profile.

Pats were indeed staying in St. Augustine (it fits in perfectly with Belicheck's plan to keep players out of the spotlight and focused on the game). Why DAB over JAX I don't know, but I'm sure a 767-400 would be a sight at DAB (sure beats CRJs, ERJs, and MD-80s).

yeah... the party is over. Sure was cool to see the 764's in dab. Weather coulda been better, but I got one worth uploading. It's in the Q and should be screened in 3-4 days. (I deleted my older one out of the Q since this one is better.. the old shot can be seen at 'another' site)

I just wanted to second or third that the Pats were in St. Augestine....as for why DAB over JAX....well since JAX is actually north of town and St. Augestine is right in the middle, it would make DAB a little bit shorter of a ride. Also SGJ had three DL738's.....one of them going to LAX today. Couldn't imagine that takeoff if it was full plus fuel. and SGJ is only 75 feet wide.

These St. Augustine DL 738's made me a little curious about the airport so I did a little research. I found codes of both SGJ and UST for the same airport. and to correct LV Rwy 13-31 is actually 7996 feet long x 150 feet wide. I am sorry I cannot provide a link but if you go airnav.com and type in airport code UST you will get all the info including a good airport diagram and even a photo. I was actually surprised how large the airport is, even has an FAA Tower.

Yeah, SGJ just got the tower less than 2 years ago. When I first started flying there to go to the FlyBy cafe it was uncontrolled. Busy and interesting little airport. And Patty Wagstaff and Dale Snodgrass (airshow greats) have their planes based there, and you can see Grumman E-2 Hawkeyes, C-2's and F-5's there as well.

Brian:

The Patriots flew out on N840MH, which was the 2nd out of 3 767s to leave today. It was parked at the old International Terminal, where the Patriots boarded from there.

FYI for the those in DAB area for the Daytona 500. In years past, DL has used a 762 for the flight that departs late in the afternoon for ATL. This flight seems to be timed to depart about 45-60 minutes after the 500 is over. For those that love biz jets, DAB will usually be firing them off fairly quickly after the race and it still takes a few hours for the field to clear out. With the traffic as bad as it is after the race, the place to go to watch all of the activity and be out of the way of the police traffic patterns and parking lots is to use one of the closed business parking lots off the Bellvue (sp?) extension road that meanders around the airport's south side from Clyde Morris to Williamson Blvd. Get there about 20 minutes before the race ends and your in for a good 3-4 hours of some real good plane spotting.

I have worked at DAB for the last 5 yrs or so on the ramp for DL. In the last couple of years we actually have not had any extra sections for the 500. Im not sure about this year though. Having the 764's in town was fun...loading them wasn't though!

B777ER, I thought of a better place to watch the DAB departures after the Daytona 500 and that is the ERAU south lot, although it may not be open to anyone who does not have an ERAU sticker or ID.

They were checking IDs the day of the Pepsi 400, but fortunately I go there. I sat a good 3 hours watching everything from King Air 200s, Lears and Citations to Emb 120s, Saab 2000s and 727s take off one after another.

I will be out at DAB during Race Week photographing the NASCAR airforce. I will probably sit in the ERAU parking lots the day before and day of the Daytona 500.

For those wondering...

I logged N833MH at 11am alongside the Comair CRJ-700 just as the Primaris 757 took off, of course in the overcast and drizzly conditions! Rats! N840MH was at the international concourse as mentioned.

I was over at the speedway at 0445 on Sunday morning to catch a few laps of the 24Hrs of Daytona, but should have stopped by the airport to log the nearly 50 bizjets! Was down to but a few when I checked back in on Monday.

A340Spotter... were you with a couple other guys shooting from one the ERAU parking lots early on Sunday morning?

As for the Daytona 500 spotting locations... If anyone is interested, there are two free parking lots that are right next to 7L, one to the right side around the N3 area, and the other one is right across Williamson underneath the approach path of 7L... You could park at either and sit there all day watching.

I am not exactly sure which spots you are talking about. There is a gravel area right next to 7L along Midway Ave where I often see spotters, but the day before the Pepsi 400 I was there with several others and a cop on a powertrip chased everyone out.

Those other spots which are the free parking areas that you mention, don't you think that they will be full during the Daytona 500?

I am just praying for a west wind during Race Week so I can sit in the ERAU south lot and photograph the planes as they come in on 25R and taxi right in front of me as they prepare to take off on 25R.

I'm sorry, I might have been a bit confusing.... there are 2 lots, one is directly across from Williamson beneath the approach to 7L, and the other is on Bellevue Extension ( I said N3, but that side would be P3)... It looks like a cow/horse pasture with a white split rail fence, but if you drive by you'll see signs for parking.

As for it being crowded, yes it probably will be, but you would simply have to get there early in the morning. I have tickets to the race so it is ideal to get there really early and just hang out for a while to beat all the traffic closer to race-time.

Like you said, hopelly theyll be using 25R as they were last year IIRC.

I got my new digital camera so i am going to be taking pictures of what i can. A few planes came in last wednesday evening. The Penske CRJ taxied in front of me to take off on 25R and I got that, unfortunately the wind shifted to the east soon after and the Hendrick N509RH Saab 2000 and Everham Motorsports Emb 120 took off on 7L soon followed by N508RH Hendrick Saab 2000 landing on 7L also.

Today I seen a bunch of planes take off around 6:30- RCR Emb120, Hendrick Saab 2000, someone's (forgot which team) D328, the Roush 727, several King Airs and Lears and of course Joe Gibbs trusty old G159- ever notice how many lights those things have at night? Seems like they come in by the bunches early in the morning, then depart late morning, return late afternoon and depart in the evening.

Daytona has a south southwest wind at 10-15 mph tomorrow, good chance they may be using 25R. I will have my eyes set on flight explorer to see what is leaving JQF and what is coming to DAB.

I'm gonna keep an eye on flightexplorer as wel and will try and get around and make some pictures throughout this week when something interesting is coming in and when I have the time. As for the 500, im working till 5pm, but from 5-6 i wil be out to get pictures of the departing traffic (Assuming weather is nice.) 25 ops would be ideal. When does the race end?

I think most people just fly into MCO and drive over to DAB. I think any carrier could do very well if they would offer late flights out of DAB or MCO on the 20th. They moved the start time for the race back to 2 pm so if you have a departure from MCO before 8 pm, it's going to be tight with traffic. I would think a 9-10 pm departure would fill up for sure if you could still make connections to a hub.

Better yet, bring some widebodys into MCO.

"Better yet, bring some widebodys into MCO." - Quickmover

Thought almost every major (& minor) brings heavies into MCO already? They did when I lived there! Even A Northwest 747-234B, even a Continental 777-224, regularly scheduled, not to mention the Twice, three and sometimes four times daily Virgin 744s. Can't get much bigger than that- until Virgin starts sending their A380s on the MCO-LGW route, which is iffy at best. In an airport that serves More Passengers than any other Airport in Florida (31,143,388 in 2004) it would seem very hard to believe that there aren't widebodies in daily use already.  Laugh out loud

Here's the current flight schedules for MCO:
http://www.orlandoairports.net/goaa/schedule/schedules.htm

Great to hear DAB's traffic is getting a boost again, even if its for a few days. Anybody remember the LTU L1011s that used to come in during the spring & summer? Weird how theres no entries in either DB, yet I have an article of when they pulled out of DAB from the Orlando Sentinel showing an L-1011, somewhere.

Let's see those pictures! lol

I worked both the Patriots and Eagles flights into Jacksonville, it was to Cecil Field, waaay out on the westside of JAX. The Patriots stayed at the Sawgrass, a nice resort in the St Augustine area, so it took them upwards of an hour to get from VQQ-resort...I heard they weren't too happy with the commute, but St Aug-DAB isn't a short hop either.

Either way, I'm just glad I didn't have to work the flight out....I'm sure their bags were 10x heavier, with all the crap Jacksonville merchandise, trophies, and other stolen goods  Laugh out loud

Unfortunately all of these ops happened in the dark tonight: But DAB saw a Falcon Air 727 and 733 and is about to see a Miami Air 738 come. I wish this had been daylight. I was not even aware that Falcon Air had 733s.

The winds were perfect today and ops were on the 25s but barely any ops. I have been wanting to get Dale Earnhart Incs E120, but it was too dark when it arrived tonight.

I can only wish for all the NASCAR flights to arrive between 4-6 pm on the 25s when the light is right and the ERAU south lot has room to park.

Didn't last year Hooters Air fly to DAB?

There is a Falcon Air Express 727 with a dark blue tail with white X parked near Jet Center amongst the NASCAR planes. The 727 is parked where Roush Racing usually parks their 727-100. It came in last night from CLT. I assume it is carrying some pit crews.

DAB goes under slot control for IFR flights tomorrow until I think Monday.

Hey did anyone notice the helicopters pulling banners today? I haven't seen choppers pulling banners for years and they were usually those MASH choppers, but these were Jet Rangers.

Hooters Air did come into town last year for the races...

I remember last year seeing a couple helicopters towing some "Nextel Cup" banners over the shoreline, pretty cool if you ask me...

Yeah I believe one of the banners was a Nextel Cup one, it was white or yellow. It was in the distance but it said something like 2 things built for speed and it showed a phone on it. I couldn't read the other banner which was blue.

It was the first time in my life that I had seen something other than a MASH helicopter pulling a sign and its been a good 20 years since i seen a chopper period pulling one. Those Jet Rangers almost looked as if they were struggling.

Due to 9-11 security laws, are they banned from flying during the races?

What about a blimp? Do we expect to see a blimp of some sort this year during the Daytona 500?

If I am not mistaken, all airspace is closed during the race. I am not sure if this pertains to Continental and Delta who would be arriving during the race possibly.

I remember at the 400 there was supposedly a stopping of flights but I remember that Beech 76 with the yellow tail doing a bunch of touch and goes on 7R right before the race and I am sure the speedway was loaded with people. I also recall seeing a couple Delta flights arrive while the race was happening as well as a few early departures by early eliminated drivers.
