Flights To Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan?

Tue Feb 08, 2005 1:04 am

Anyone has information of flight operations to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (FRU)? What are the European airlines with service to FRU?

Last year in order to reach Bishkek I flew to ALA (Almaty, Kazakhstan). LH (4 x week A343) and KL ( 4 x week with the 763) offer flights from Europe to ALA. Both KL and LH offer ground tranportation from Almtaty to Bishkek (less than 1 hour away). There is a strong German population in ALA (explains LH service) and heavy Dutch foreign investment (explain KL flights).

Is ALA the major airport for Central Asia? I assume Aerflot is very strong in this area. Also got surprised to note that Air India and Turkish Airways fly to ALA.

And what about TAS - Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Is it served only by LH? Is LH the stronger European airline in the region?

Hardiwv, BA has service with A321 to Bishkek (operated by BritishMediterranian). For sure one of the more cheaper fares you could find is with Aeroflot via SVO.

And about TAS, you will find some direct flights with Uzbekistan Airlines.

BMed operates from LHR ALA (3x weekly by 320 via ?), FRU (3x weekly by 321 via BAK) and TAS (3x weekly by 321 via EVN). In addition, 4L flies twice-weekly from ALA to LHR non-stop using 752. From TAS, HY flies 4x weekly to LHR, normally using the 763 and 752.

You can normally save £150-200 by buying two seperate return flights - LHR-SVO-LHR and then SVO-TAS-SVO. A normal return trip from LHR to TAS and FRU seems to cost over £500 - over £600 is usual in summer. A normal fare to ALA from LHR starts around £415 and thence increases quickly.

Also got surprised to note that Air India and Turkish Airways fly to ALA.

AI does not serve ALA, and neither did they ever afaik nor do they plan... That area would probably rather fall in the range of IC. Many traders come from these states to India, so some charters/services exist

I just double-checked the IC webpage.. indeed, they do not offer any codeshares to ALA.. but they apparently have a codeshare to FRU with the respective airline.. (there are some weird codeshares of IC, and I wonder whether one single person ever booked the flight) - more on their new, great webpage under network: http://www.indian-airlines.com
IC is far away from introducing flights there (KBL should come some time, hopefully, and more destinations to Pakistan, and they have to keep up with competition in Gulf, and maybe beyond.. ) Hence, I would note expect any of the aforementioned cities to be served by an Indian career in the near future..

Hope that helps, cheers

Don't be surprised about Turkish Airlines.

Since 1990 Turkey has been rapidly expanding its regional political influence amongst Muslim countries of the former Soviet Union (the "Stans").

Mrniji:

IC - Indian Airlines, serves ALA nosntop from DEL, in full codeshare with Kazakhstan's based airline 4L - Air Astana.

DEL-ALA is operated with the 737 and 757, with a flight duration of 3h50min.

Flights number are IC9908/IC9007.

IC itself doesn't fly between DEL and ALA - the flight would be operated by 4L. The 752 and 73G operate once flight per week each.

Turkish Airlines offers service to Bishkek several times per week using a mix of B738s and A313s.

The flights offer good connection times via Istanbul for many of its European destinations.

Turkish Airlines serves the majority of the Central Asian Republics and has done very well with those routes. Between ethnic bonds and newly developed business connections THY has become a force in the region offering multiple daily nonstop flights to the area.

If you go via SVO remember that SVO isn't a very nice airport, especially if you need a taxi to change to terminal 1 and get trapped by the SVO taxi mafia. It happend to me once and I had to pay US$ 20 for a tour around the airport  Pissed and even that price was after long discussions. In the beginning, they wanted to have $ 50. Happend June 2002

Interesting, that they do not publish themselves on their webpage... however, has there been one single pax booking that flight on the IC (noting the crazy flight no Big grin )?

I doubt though AI anc IC to 'do it themselves' in the future Big grin

I found SVO to be perfectly fine when I was last there.

I found SVO to be perfectly fine when I was last there.

I also had no reason to complain about Sheremetyevo II, but I do have a reason to complain about the taxi mafia.

In 2002, Domestic and GUS flights were served from Sheremetyevo I, which is on the other side of the runway, you can't walk there.

SU offers a shuttle bus, but I was there early in the morning and the desk was closed and nobody was available for information. Nobody was speaking English, I can't speak russian. Some people from my flight from Berlin spoke some words in german and told me the desk will open at 8am. My flight to St. Petersburg was scheduled at Terminal one for 8:55am  Sad. So I had no choice than to go to the taxi mafia and finally paid $20 for a trip around the airport in a scraped Volga. Well, finally I arrived fine in LED and enjoyed a trip in a Tu134A which made me smiling again  Smile

Hi Hardi

Bmed is an independent airline which entered into a franchise agreement with BA. Bmed pay BA a fee to use their liveries, uniforms, flight codes and booking engine. BA also share a % of the revenue generated on Bmed flights. In return, by using the BA brand, Bmed gets more business. It's the same logic with Mcdonald's resturants.

Bmed's A320 and A321s are kitted out with WT and Club World.

For BA, it's an opportunity to feed traffic into LHR and export the brand into markets that it cannot profitably serve on its own. BA itself used to fly to ALA, as well as places such as Baku, Tashkent and Tehran.

More info on the commercial benefits can be found on their website. Bmed might even take over BA's suspended flights to RUH and JED.

I wonder that LH isn't stronger in these middle Asian former Sowjet countries.

Almaty in Kazakstan is served daily with 332. There are strong ethnic ties between Germany and Kazakstan. There are roumours that Kazakstan could force LH to serve it's new capital Astana in the Kazak desert. Kazakstan is oil rich and booming somehow. I hope that LH can maintain it's frequncies to ALA and offer additional services to Astana.

Tashkent was canceled some years ago by LH. I don't know why.

The Turkmenistan capital Ashgabad is served 3x as an extend from FRA-Baku. Both destinations are mainly served because of the oil industry.

Kirgiztan capital Bishkek and Tadshikistan capital Duschanbe are not served by LH. But their national carriers have some services to Germany. I wish LH would explore these countries too. LH has a good location for connecting them with the rest of the western world.

LH flies to ALA nonstop 4 x week with the A330.

Completely agree. I'm also surprised LH did not explore more this niche market. I know the situation in Central Asia is rather complicated, with a lot of political turmoil and interference by Russia, by this market has a good potential and is extremely under-served. Turkish Airways at least is quickly filling the gap!

My timetable shows 4x 332 FRA-ALA for February and 1x 343. But that is only seasonal. From April on they are scheduled daily with 332 again.

Tks for the info, JoFM. Intersesting that during high season LH reduces flights to ALA.
