Delta Flying 767's At La Guardia

Wed Mar 29, 2000 1:25 am

New York's La Guardia Airport is not a safe place for Delta to fly 767's in and out of. Delta should just fly the 757's into La Guardia. The airport has enough problems with seeing to the safety of other aircraft. An aircraft with over 200+ passengers doesn't need to risk landing at La Guardia.

I think if you were to reference the flight manual for required stopping distances, you would note that LGA is more than capable of handling the 767.

The number of passengers an aircraft can carry has no bearing to it's operational performance.

In addition to Delta 767s, I have seen American DC-10s, Eastern A300s and L-1011s and Delta L-1011s at LGA. I've flown on Delta 767s to Cincinnati and an Eastern A300 from Ft. Myers into LGA. I doubt there is much of a safety concern.

I have seen an EI A330 take off on a 7000 ft runway at BOS, and LGA'a runways are both 7000 ft.

The only thing they have to be aware of is the distance of the flight. You can't fly more than 1,250 miles (is that number right?) out of LGA. One of those 767s can easily take you to LAX from there but they are not permitted to make those flights.

wouldn't it be more economical to use a 757 into LGA and use the 767 into EWR or JFK?

No, LGA is the most convenient airport for many New Yorkers. Delta must be able to get good load factors at LGA with the 767 which may be wasted at JFK or EWR.

LGA is only 8 miles away from Midtown, and it was a 30 min ride this morning there are 7:15 AM. EWR is more suited to New Jersey citizens, and CO has a fortress there, so Delta might not try. Plus, they use the 738 and 757 there. JFK is a 50 minute SUBWAY RIDE (no traffic!) from Midtown, so it is closer to Long Island than Midtown.
