AA-MORE SJC Cuts

Tue Feb 08, 2005 9:08 am

I was talking to a friend today and AA has decided to cut the following routes.
SJCJFK
SJCSNA
SJCHNL(Seasonal Only May-Sept)
SJCOGG(Seasonal)

I gasp everytime I hear about a cut from SJC, esp when from AA...i surely hope the NRT route isn't next. I'm scared we are going to be a little po-dunk airport again. At least we are getting i-Air, but then i'm sure UA will put their IAD flight on the chopping block before you know it.

As of now, the SJC-Hawai'i and SJC-SNA flights are not being cut.

SJC-OGG and SJC-HNL operate as one triangle route (SJC-HNL-OGG-SJC) during the off season and two seperate non-stops during peak seasons (winter break and Memorial Day to Labour Day).

SJC-SNA has been reduced from 11 to 8 dailies.

SJC-JFK is gone in June. AA will soon no longer operating trans-cons from San Jose, after once operating daily flights to Boston, Miami, and New York City.

I think at one time or another I can remember AA non-stop from SJC to:

(Note-Not all routes are discontinued)

BOS (M11/D10)
JFK (767's 757s)
MIA (757's)
DFW (M11/D10/767/757/M80)
AUS (757,M80)
PHX (M80/RJ)
DEN(M80)
SEA (M80)
PDX (M80)
RNO (M80)
BUR (M80)
LAX (M80/RJ)
SNA (757/M80/738/RJ)
SAN (M80/RJ)
LAS (757/RJ)
CDG 767
TPE 777
HNL 757/D10
OGG 757

And sure more I've missed---not to mention the countless Eagle Flights back in the early 90's when they had a hub here.

I really wish that AA would have never purchased Reno Air. They destroyed the Reno hub and basically tried a hub out of SJC, but haven't done too well. Reno Air was great, but AA isn't very committed to the SJC market as a hub.

Does someone have like AA's total history in SJC? from when they first opened up shop to their slow decline now? I can remember as far back as when they shared Terminal A with US...but I was pretty young then.

Boy oh boy! Here we go again with AA dismantling SJC. First time around was with Air Cal, then Reno Air.!! What a sad story, and it shows they have zero confidence in the Silicone Valley Market. I remember when they started their JFK service the first time around. It was a really big deal when they were still in the old and ancient terminal. They have made way too many mistakes with these mergers and now what they've done with TWA.

I for one, like SJC even though it is old and decrepit with the exception of the WN & AA terminal. It's easy to get into/out of and the delays are minimal. Maybe they'll have to move? Has anything been going on with new terminal construction.

Why did they drop mainline on the SJC-LAX-SJC runs? That seems ridiculous to do. Who would want to fly on a cramped AEagle ERJ vs. WN 73Xs or even UA Express CRJ which are a bit roomier?

Also I've never understood why they didn't buy and or lease any 73Gs as this would be a perfect hub airport for this type of equipment. Any thoughts about this?

Any ideas who might come in on the HNL/OGG routes "IF" they drop them or NRT? I don't see UA dropping IAD though they might turn it over to TED? Any thoughts or ideas?

Have a nice day or evening wherever you maybe!

I flew a D10 from DFW to SJC back in the early 90s. THOSE were the days.
I actually got breakfast too.. and me and dad were non-revving. That was my first DC-10 flight.

I personally doubt that SJC would go to Ted from IAD. I know they would be competing with Independence Air which will be low fare, but the SJC market isn't exactly low yielding. There is some high yielding traffic on the route due to all of the tech businesses that are near SJC. The flight connects to UA's European flights out of IAD. Since there is a lot of hub traffic going to IAD, I don't think it would be a Ted type of route because Ted shoots for mainly O/D markets. Losing the first class cabin would be bad since there are executives flying UA to IAD and then jumping on a 777 or 767 to Europe in Business or First class. Those type of people would not fly UA if they had to start their journey with a 5 hour economy flight.

I could see Aloha stepping in for HNL and OGG. Their 73G's would be better suited to the market year round than AA's 757. Also, this would be uber-convenient for me to get home from school.

Not a chance. UA will not dump a flight to a hub from an area with a lot of FF members. Has Indy even passed their proving runs yet?

AA is dedicated to their SJC-NRT flight. They won't be dumping it anytime soon. They always have had decent loads on this flight thanks to the techies flying back in forth.

Personally, in mid to late 90's when my dad was doing the tech thing here in AUS, he flew for his company to Tokyo at least 6 times a year and 4 of those flights he'd have AA AUS-SJC-NRT.

Sad to see the all transcons from SJC are cut.

Mikesairways......SJC-ORD on 738's, but are now relegated to MD-80's....i've flown that route a bunch of times, and once our plane landed at a quarter to midnight!

I remember Larry Ellison (billionaire founder of Oracle Corp) wanted SJC to be open in the wee hours of the morning, but not too many locals were too keen on it.

Sad to see how AA has totally dumped SJC.....actually, I don't really think AA does all to well in the entire Northern Bay Area, given that UA has a fortress here........

I like to think that my AAdvantage Gold (and soon to be Platinum..yippy  Smile ) membership will get me some advantages here @ SFO, but the lines are always dead...unlike the UA lines, which almost stretch to the AA counters....well not quite, but they are still large at times!

How is SJC-NRT doing? Are they getting full loads on that flight? if not, that flight is probably going down the toilet pretty soon.

As for IAD-SJC, I would think that is a good route give that Northern Virginia and San Jose are two of the nations largest technology regions. Of course, many of these companies are small, nimble, and price sensitive too- so maybe they are less likely to pay userous walkup fares? I am sure there is demand for flights from business travellers though.

i'd be curious to see history of loads on the JFK-SJC route. i dont do it often, maybe once every other month but my god it is a challenge to find a flight with space available since they seemingly have those 757s filled!

maybe i was just on the packed flights...but this is a shame since SJC was a chance to visit friends down in Santa Cruz without having to bother with SFO.

Nashville, Raliegh/Durham, St. Louis, and now ... San Jose

I would have to say that it is only Nashville that as of right now has gotten the true shaft. St Louis and Raleigh still have fairly good sized operations while SJC can still be considered a focus city.

I think that BNA only has a couple flights to ATL (BellSouth), LGA, and LAX outside of the hubs, so in my estimation BNA got it the worst.

Imagine what SJC would be like if the "bubble" didn't burst in Silicon Valley.I think AA's pullout can be directly tied into the consolidation of the tech. industry in Silicon Valley. I flew out of SJC a bunch of times in 99 and 2000 and it was a MADHOUSE!! Remember though--economic times are cyclical--maybe it will come back in 5-10 years???

Irishpower, you are correct regarding the bubble "heyday" and SJC....but if you take a drive around Silicone Valley, you'll see that 1/2 the business property is up for rent............

I'm not too sure if we will ever see S.Valley like they way it was 5-10 years ago.....sure it will exist, but there will be more and more mergers and aquisitions and outsourcing, hence less companies or large comapanies in S.Valley..........too bad..it was fun while it lasted..........if anything, the only way I see SJC picking up substantially up is if there is an increase in population (which his happening)

Now if our moronic Govt. could get its head out of its a** and create the proper incentives for corporations to keep workers and production facilities here, then we would see a decent size pickup of the Valley.........

Its just not happening to general tech either....South San Francisco is considered the biotech capital of the world, but now we are seeing many biotech companies starting up in India also.....

I can understand AA dropping SJC to BOS and the New York area, due to B6. But I don't get dropping MIA, since that is the Latin American/Western Carribean hub.

I know that AA has some Latin American service out of LAX and DFW, but by dropping MIA, that's basically telling passengers for South America to drive to SFO.

For those of you who miss QQ, Reno Air was not making money, and WN was making the situation worse and worse. Since QQ didn't have access to a lot of capital, it couldn't get the planes to compete with WN's shuttle-style service on competing routes.

In other words, why work your schedule around QQ, when WN, and in some cases UA, had a flight that fit your schedule.

The strange thing of AA's SJC history is that prior to QQ, SJC was an American hub. When AA cut back, QQ came into existence. They were a part of the AAdvantage program and flew MD80's and 90's.
So, AA buys QQ to get, really, I don't know what they got because as soon as AA purchased QQ, they grounded the 90's and gutted the whole route system.
Question is, if you cut back a hub, buy a carrier to make SJC a hub again and they gut that carriers routes and be back to where you were, why spend the bucks to do this. What was accomplished? I know the Silicon Valley bust and all, but still...........................

And isn't SJC about to undergo a major terminal expansion and renovation?

Yes. It's going to be quite a project. I can't wait til it's finished. You can learn about it here: http://www.sjc.org/

SJC's biggest problem is its facilities. While terminal A is huge improvement over the old, and sorry looking terminal C, Terminal A is very small and cramped. It is already out-dated and poorly designed. Like much of the freeways in the Bay Area, Terminal A was built too small from the beginning and not built with future growth in mind.

I'd say the Terminal situation is a major reason more airlines do not operate a much larger operation at SJC. There is simply no room.

The strange thing of AA's SJC history...
There was once time when WN had gates A1-A6 with AA at A7 on. Now A1 is gone, and is now where the international "terminal" sits. Then WN and AA shared A7. WN now owns A7. Then they shared A8. Now WN has A8. So now we are A2-A8. Hmmmmmm, I wouldn't mind the thought of pushing a WN 737 out of gates A16 A16B and A11! Would be challenging, but FUN! Would remind me of LAX's WN gates 1 and 3A.  Big thumbs up

Well, as a loyal AA SJC traveller, I'm not that upset about the JFK cut. I never wanted to fly the 757 that far when I could go to SFO for a 767 (except for last summer). I think the main thing is JFK has a lot of high paying travelers who aren't happy on 757s and want the nice 767 first and business seats. I once overheard someone in the SFO Admirals club say that she always flew out of SFO to JFK since the SJC flights didn't have footrests. I chuckled since at the flight that was leaving to JFK was a 757, but I'm betting she is representative of most of the population. The rest of the crowd that would fill up the back is just as happy going to SFO since they fly infrequently.

As for the SNA flights, is 11 to 8 really that important? I remember when AA only flew 4 MD-80s a day to SAN. I emjoy the 8 or so flights now much more, even though they are on ERJs. The ERJs are nice enought and its much easier to have 8 flights to plan by than 4. I kinda with Vegas would go ERJs to get more times per day.
