A380 At DFW?

Tue Feb 08, 2005 1:17 pm

I saw recently that with new international terminal opening at DFW this summer they will be able to accomidate the a380 superjumbo. My question is what airline(s) would bring it to DFW. Also would there be a big enough market for it?

No one airline in their right mind....  Big grin

Also would there be a big enough market for it?

That would be a sound no...

Don't hold you breath! IAH would probably see one before DFW, and that will be a cold day in Hell!

I don't know about passenger airlines, but maybe FedEx or UPS would fly down there every once in awhile.

I was sooo waiting for someone to post this.

No offense, but A380 at DFW is one of the biggest, if not the biggest pipe dreams in civil aviation.

DFW doesn't have passenger 747 service!!
No airline in its right mind would put such an aircraft on a rotation to DFW!!

DFW is a MD-80 and 757 regional airport disguised as an international airport.

It should be possible to build a terminal in a clever way for the A380. E.g. two 767-sized gates (or maybe 777/A346 sized) separated by a removable wall and well placed airbridges. In that way you have a terminal built exactly for today's needs and still the possibility to accommodate the A380 without major changes. Any thoughts?

Wouldn't happen, not enough cargo ops down there as DFW supports mostly domestic cargo for FX and 5X. Their A380s will be going on very heavy routes, like China from ANC, and then ANC down to the hubs in MEM & SDF respectively.

The chances of an A380 diverting to DFW from SFO, LAX, ORD, JFK, or MIA seem rather slim, but higher than the chances of scheduled service.  Smile

If I'm not mistaken, and I may be, but isn't FedEx also going to send the 380 into their GSO hub? Would that make CLT, ATL, RDU, ORF, and MEM their primary diversion airports?

ERJ170,

It was reported all last year that the 38- was going to be used for Europeans Ops out of GSO.

In an article last Sunday in the Greensboro News and Record, FedEx was quoted saying that the a380 will only be used in the US for FedEx betweem Memphis and Anchorage.

Apparently smaller craft will be used for trans-atlantic ops out of GSO.

DFW is A380 ready, but doesnt mean we'll get it. I'd say maybe UPS would bring it. Thats it

Dfwneedsqf,

as your nickname indicates, DFW NEEDS QF!
QF is oneworld, as AA is, and so DFW is a oneworld hub. It would provide perfect connections between nearly every major city in the US (east and south of the US in particular) and Sydney with only one stop at DFW.
It's just speculation, of course, and the probability of actually seeing a Qantas A380 @ DFW is quite low, but it's possible and would make sense.
And, well, since the distance is 7454 nm according to the great circle mapper, we'll probably have to wait for the IGW version  Sad
