YYC Cracks 9 000 000 Passenger Mark In 2004

Wed Feb 09, 2005 8:14 am

Calgary has surpassed 9 million passengers for the first time. It will be interesting to see how Calgary fares vs Montreal now that Mirabel passengers have been shifted to Dorval/Trudeau

Now now, don't start another YYC/YUL fight. Thankfully YYZ likes to stay neutral in all this.  Big grin

Actually, just looking at the YUL website, traffic is at ~9.55 million not counting December. Judging by historical numbers, they will come in around 10.2-10.3 million so YYC has a little ways to go.

By comparison, YEG is at 3.7 million (end November) and will likely come in around 4.1 million. For it's population, YYC is punching above it's weight compared to these 2 other cities.

I am happy to hear this.

In the future, Calgary will have a lot of potential domestically and transborder.

Was there any real new service addtions or air craft upgrades that contriubuted to this increase? Any new YYC service rumors?

WestJet's expansion has helped, plus Calgary is booming right now.The Oil and Resource industry is busy , plus hi-tech companies are moving here.
There's a new cargo facility as well.

It's also a great place to live ! (I'm a tad biased  Big grin )

Well, YYC gets its numbers by stealing international and US bound pax mainly from YEG. Thank you Air Canada....

Captaingomes.....you can do some research. It's no secret how many flights out of YYC pick up so many YEG and norther Alberta pax (SFO, LAX and LHR)

Amazing growth rate! If the same growth rate continues, 10M will be reached in 2005 and 11M in 2007.

WJ's growing hub at YYC, YYC's high PCI and growing population could propel this even faster.

it's all part of the hub system, so some airports lose out in a few point to point routes. Calgary can sustain more routes than Edmonton, and due to their relatively close proximity, that means that in many cases it is more efficient for airlines to fly YEG passengers to other places out of YYC. You strike me as an informed member, so I'm sure you know this, and that I'm not telling you anything new.

Edmonton is just in a really bad geographic area.

The two markets combined into one via YYC, makes it more potent for air services to Alberta.

The fact that passengers from YEG to the US have to fly over YYC anyway (whether on nonstop flights or thru YYC) makes YYC a well-placed hub for YEG travellers since they are not travelling out of their way.

International Traffic jumped to new records this year.
Many of the months for last year saw growth in the 10-20% from the previous years total.

Thanks in part to the likes of:
Thomas Cook which is year round,
All Nippon Airways and their charters,
Air Canada doubles to LHR
MyTravel servicing Last winter/Spring and Summer before pulling out this Fall.
And a few others which I can't think of right now.

I bet Cargo is also a record year, maybe this time we will top the 100,000tonnage mark. In reality that has probably already been done but so far no data is available. Maybe 110,000tonnage would sound a little realistic for the 2004 year in thanks to CLX,KAL, and Asiana plus all those American Freighters.

Glad to see the $$ invested in the YYC expansion will pay off! It certainly is looking better every day! ...as long as WestJet keeps expanding... it keeps a little extra $$ coming down here to YQL...although I can't say exactly why...hehe

Now if only YQL had better quality YQL-YYC service...1900D's..how sad.
