Country With Most Airports Per Square Kilometer

Wed Feb 09, 2005 8:33 am

So, with the exception of especially tiny countries with only 4 or 5 airports, which countries have the most airports per square kilometer?

My guess....Germany.

Of course Monaco has one Heliport for every 2kms but that doesn't count in this thread.

I think the UK has the most jet-capable international airports per square km - it's probably something like 50 airports in a tiny country (the big cities + Bournemouth, Blackpool, Sheffield, Inverness, Prestwick, Southend, Manston etc etc), in a fraction of the space of a country like Germany.

Even though it's a big country, I would think the USA is probably right up there as well.

Maldives: 5 airports, 300 sq. km. = 16.667 x 10^-3 airports/sq. km

Of course, that's not counting all the places they land with seaplanes!

any country that's an island group will have tons of airports. but yes, those are small. (Hawaii undoubtedly has the most per U.S. state)

UK is a good guess. Japan is probably up there too.

basically, any country that has three qualities: small, crowded, and rich

Luxembourg is a really keen example that was mentioned, but seems to have been missed. It is a city, not a large one at that, and it has a rather decent sized airport.

Well Luxembourg does have an airport, but the country as such isn't as small as people like to believe.

My best guess: Singapore; which has Changi, Paya Lebar and Seletar on their one island. 647.5 sq km

Good thread.

If size is everything, I'm sure we're beat. But if pop per airport is concerned, I think we'd be among the top few.

Could Gibraltar really even be called a country? It seems like it's a country in the sense that Aruba or Puerto Rico are countries.

No, Gibraltar is not considered a country, it's just British overseas territory...

No, Gibraltar has British sovereignty....as long as Tony Bliar doesn't capitulate and give it away to Spain against the wishes of the locals.

I do not want to sound biased but from the moment I read the subject matter of this discussion I knew tiny Gibraltar would be the winner.
Gibraltar is not an independent state but certainly has its own parliament, judiciary, laws, taxes etc. Albeit based on UK practices and institutions. The only things Gibraltar's elected representatives are not responsible for are foreign affairs and defence. That is why in certain political circles it is deemed to be a British Dependent (not overseas) Territory. Its the French and the Dutch who use the overseas terminology when referring to a number of their small former colonial territories. The difference being that such territories do not have their own national parliaments but send elected representatives to the French or Dutch national assembly respectively. SLC1 and 319114, please take note.
Thanks Steve6666 for your supporting words regarding its British sovereign status. Long may it continue. Mind you I think Messrs Blair and Straw have now realised that Gibraltar is not theirs to give away!

Not true, Columbia107, at least not for the Netherlands. The Netherlands Antilles for instance are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but are largely self governing and have their own parlement.

It therefore seems that what we have in the Netherlands Antilles is a hybrid arrangement between the British and the French arrangements. Thanks for bringing to my attention my misinterpretation of the facts.
