A friend of mine who flies for AA
told me an interesting story. Back when AA
, a 767 was below 10,000 feet and getting into the arrival pattern.
For no good reason, the insturments went from showing a descent at 3 degrees to climbing at 10 degrees, while inverted!
The captain got an F/A on the intercom and told her to get every portable electronic device shut off immediately. The F/As found several kids in Business class playing with GameBoys, and told them to turn them off and put them away.
Sure enough, the instruments in the cockpit went back to show the descent, with the plane right side up.
This incident is what got AA
to start requesting that all electronic devices be shut off below 10,000 feet.
I look at this way. If the pilots feel that they have a higher margin of safety when all electronic devices are shut off, I am more than willing to cooperate. There is no such thing as too much safety.
