747 First Flight 36 Years Ago

Thu Feb 10, 2005 1:03 am

On February 9, 1969, RA001, the prototype for new breed of wide-body passenger jets, made her maiden flight from Paine field. While we will soon see a bigger bird take to the air from Toulouse , I thought I'd post this reminder of what was certainly a great achievement 36 years ago.

If that Image had a wider angle to it you might see me to......I was standing holding my Daddys hand about 50 yards on the otherside of the Taxiway that day....I can remember it like it was yesterday.......Some of the Boeing workers were hedging bets on whether it would fly....My Dad won $70 daollars that day...

BTW....I was Eight Years old.

That's really not bad. This great airliner is now almost 40 years old. I really love the 747 and I have flown on the -200, -300 and -400 many times with different airlines. But as a fan of this airliner I have to admit that it is time for a brand new aircraft in this size, like the A 380. I am really looking forward on its first flight, 36 years after the famous "Jumbo". The 747 was the first step into the modern civil aviation.

Thanks for finding that picture. I had searched for it but did not find it.

Btw, the 737-700 also made its first flight on Feb 9th (in 1997).

After more than a third of a century the 747 design still impresses me - especially when I'm able to get a seat on the upper deck. When you consider that the 747 production line is still active (but a bit slow) you realize that the 747 will be operational for well over half a century. That's a huge achievement.

Hats down to my dearest commercial airliner on a successful and long, fortunately, on-going career.

Well done Boeing and thank you for this magnificent machine!

Wow, a trip aboard these grand ladies, even today, for many is a "religious experience" including self  Laugh out loud

The worlds greatest commercial aircraft?

I'd say probably. When you look at the fact that it allowed more people to travel and opened up an even bigger industry that it already was.

Bill Allen and Juan Trippe are responsible for this airplane and because of those two men we have this amazing transportation industry that we have today.
