Qantas 7550, Nonstop JFK-HNL Today?

Fri Feb 11, 2005 3:54 am

If you look at http://www4.passur.com/sjc.html, set 0844 on 10 Feb and zoom out to 80 miles you'll see QFA 7550 at 34100 ft offshore, heading from JFK to HNL nonstop. Hoo dat?

I'm no specialist and will make a guess, but my thought is that since the flight from JFK-HNL came from ORD could the flight yesterday LAX-JFK been dirverted to ORD for some reason thus making the flight not getting into JFK earlier this morning. So the flight left JFK and would generally go to LAX, but since the timings were already screwed up, they decided to put those people on another Qantas flight and thus the JFK flight had no need to stop in LAX since those pax were put on a different flight. So the stop is in HNL for fuel.

Just my wild thought and I personally would love to know the real reason.

It's a 7xxx flight number. That's a code share, no?

"It's a 7xxx flight number. That's a code share, no?"

Maybe it would be in a public timetable, but I hope Passur wouldn't so describe it. In any case I doubt there are any scheduled JFK-HNL nonstops, on any passenger airline.

Could this be a Qantas cargo flight? Don't they usually do ORD-HNL?

Got me-- does QF have all-cargo 744s?

Seven thousand flight numbers are freight flights. Qantas wet leases freighters including 747-400s from Atlas Air.

Thanks for that. So this could be a scheduled flight? I wonder why Passur showed it as QANTAS instead of Atlas.

(I was out there with the scanner, but I didn't bother tuning it in, darn it.)

Does Qantas operate any cargo flights? Perhaps Polar Air or Atlas Air is flying cargo for them? According to http://flytecomm.com, the flight routing is ORD-JFK-HNL-SYD, not the usual routing for the Qantas flight out of JFK. Plus the large flight number of 7xxx would not usually be a passenger flight. Just my opinion.

That routing is definitely Atlas/Polar. In a wet-lease they use the customer airline's call signs, not Atlas/Polar.

Been discussed on A.net several times. Qantas leases Atlas Air & Polar Air Cargo B747-400F for its cargo flights. All flight currently are indeed number as 7xxx series flights.

Boeing757/767 is right.

There's also an explanation I gave in the "HNL RareBirds v4" thread. I believe it's a tech stop, because I have never seen the side cargo door open.

I did not list the flight info, but this was QFA7550 to SYD.

An additional note...Qantas 7552 is the weekly TOL-SYD flight with the tech stop in HNL. That is operated by an Atlas 744F as well...though back to a Polar 744F in a couple months again.
