What Exactly Are These Pilots Doing?

Fri Feb 11, 2005 7:37 am

I was doing my daily browse through new photos and came across this photo which im sure many of you have also. I just couldnt help but post about this picture. I am a instrument rated pilot so I have some flying experience, but cannot for the life of me figure out what these pilots are doing during this takeoff. First off that is dangerously close to a tailstrike (or maybe it was), and second the landing gear are already in transition!!!! they couldnt possibly confirm positive rate of climb when the main wheels are literally inches from the pavement. Either this is some sort of training/test flight or they are hotdogging it in which I wouldnt want to fly on Magnicharter. Anyone have any ideas or input?
Thanks

It's an illusion. You can't see the rwy from which they are departing.

Ditto Pelican - the runway you can see is in the background, not underneath the aircraft.

It appears to me a matter of camera angle and depth perception. To me it looks like this plane is well off the runway, which is out of the picture at the bottom of the image. The runway that "appears" to be beneath the plane is a parallel runway, not the one used by the plane.

Just my thoughts.

It may be an optical illusion - the paved surface you see in the picture is probably not the runway they are taking off from, the real runway being below the frame of the picture so the aircraft is higher above ground than you think ?

I might be wrong, but I'd say the runway visible in the back is a parallel runway and the plane isn't just "inches from the ground" - while it does seem a bit early for the gears to be retracting, the picture does look a bit less dramatic if you look at it in a higher resolution...

Frank

I think the tailstrike issue is just an optical illusion. The runway they took off from is below the photo, not visible. The actual altitude of the aircraft is probably more like 40 or 50 feet.

I'm gonna guess they're flying an airplane???

That's what it looks like to me, at least.

Really and truly TrnsWrld , i cant see how you could be fooled by this illusion. To me, the aircraft looks twice the size of the "runway" behind it which would be a dead giveaway that that was not the runway it took off from. However, it'll be fair to say that at some point in time we all have been fooled by shots like these including myself, however, this one cleary didnt. Good shot though by the photographer  Big thumbs up.
You are said to be a good pilot when your take-off's equal your landings.

yah ya know LimaFoxTango, I admit I dont even see how I was fooled by this picture. Your right after looking again that 737 is enormous compared to that runway seen in the background. What can I say its been a long week at work.

Biggest giveaway are the heat waves of the exhaust extending past the concrete in question. Yea, the "real" runway is completely out of the shot.

Taking off RWY 5L at MEX, you are looking at 5R.

Even though this is an illusion, I have heard that many pilots flying for Mexican airlines are former AirForce just as in the US and they sometimes revert back to military days of steep climb and gear up ASAP. It is still a cool picture and I agree if you analyze it is is fairly easy to see the plane is much higher than we think.

False! Aircraft was departing runway 23R. Runway behind is 23L.

False! Air Force pilots stay at the Air Force! MAF pilots enjoy of high salaries thanks to our taxes and that's one of the main reasons many MAF pilots don't even try to enter commercial aviation unless it's MX or AM but in the last 3 years none of these carriers have hired due to 9/11th and more!!!
