Comair Making A Move On Dallas-Love Field

Wed Mar 29, 2000 1:59 pm

Delta Connection carrier Comair, a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta Air Lines, has requested gate facilities at Dallas Love Field for Delta Connection regional jet service to Delta hubs as early as June 2000. All service would be provided with 50-seat Canadair Regional Jets.

If Delta receives permission from authorities this may mean that DL will now have a small upper hand on American. 2 Airports vs. 1.

Not true, AA/AE already has service out of Love Field to Austin and, please someone correct me if it has changed, will begin 56 seat F100 service to LAX, ORD

Eagle currently serves Love Field (DAL) with ERJ-145 aircraft with service to both Austin (AUS) and Houston Hobby (HOU).

Delta's new service will only be hub feeder service and thus not a major threat to either Eagle or Southwest, the other carrier that runs the DAL-AUS and DAL-HOU trips.

Interestingly, both DL and AA will now operate at both DFW and DAL. I don't suppose DL will be flying DAL-DFW. DAL-ATL is a definite. DAL-CVG?

While its nice to see Delta getting in the act, they could get thrashed by Southwest the same way Eagle did last year if they attempt anything other than hub feeder routes.

How about this....the Delta/Comair do "Delta Express" products??? Please, don't have this Delta/Comair's "Delta Express" go to Orlando....do more of point to point routes like Southwest. Maybe this "Delta Express" can setup a hub at Love?

There is not enough facilities at Love to allow for a "Delta Express" hub. Right now, I'm not sure where the city will even come up with gates for just a few DL operations unless they loosen some of the use restrictions placed on the other concourse.

In addition to the question of gates/facilites for a DL Xpress hub, one would have to question the rationale behind such a move. Most of the low-yield tourist traffic to Florida is from the Northeast and only the Northeast; this is why DLX is currently positioned where it is and is doing quite comfortably. A hub at DAL would be nearly 100% dependent on O&D traffic---a market which simply doesn't exist. Much better for DL and AA to stick to DFW for these routes and get those feeders to help out.
