Spanish LCC Vueling Turns In Profit Already

Fri Feb 11, 2005 7:47 pm

From: http://news.airwise.com/story/view/1108062714.html

Tiny Spanish airline Vueling, which started flying in July 2004 with two planes, expects to make a profit this year on sales of EUR115 million (USD$147 million) from transporting 2.5 million passengers.

Vueling, whose shareholders include British private equity firm Apax Partners and some managers of US low-cost carrier JetBlue, said on Thursday it had made sales of EUR22.9 million in its first six months of operations.

Way to go, Vueling! In the short time they´ve been around they certainly became my favourite LCC. Flew from VLC to CDG, BRU and SVQ with them, and just booked tickets for my parents from BRU to VLC.

That is an encouraging sign.
But they really need to get their acts together in scheduling.

Their schedules for March to May only came out yesterday.
Before that you can only book flights till end of Feb.

I have been waiting for their "summer" schedule since last
December. In an email they mentioned that it would be available
in early January. After another month of wait, the schedules
finally came out but it only last thru May... So I will now be flying
Spanair and EasyJet instead in June...

As an LCC, I think a good portion of customers are vacationers
who plan in advance. Releasing schedule till 3 weeks before
the flight date is not the best way of doing business.

I look forward to try their product, since I consider their business plan as one of the best in the airline industry and a money maker for "some" markets in the world. So far they have done a good job developing their business plan in Spain, where all main competitors (IB, JK and UX) work in a kind of oligopoly on domestic routes. A perfect example of this is the fee charged for issuing electronic tickets. IB started charging this fee and JK and UX followed. Vueling is the only Spanish airline who does not charge a fee to issue an e-tkt for domestic routes

Hopefully, I will fly with them next month...
