Some Questions About Scholes Field In Galveston

A while back, when living in Houston, I had the good fortune to volunteer at the Lone Star Flight Museum in Galveston, at Scholes International.

There had been a few questions regarding that particular airport that now come to mind:

1.) How is the name pronounced? I have always assumed (though believe I have heard it as this) it is "Shoals". Close?

2.) I have seen on AirNav.com that it is not towered, however, there appears to be a tower on top of the terminal (?) building, was it once? Or is it during peak times such as in the summer?

3.) What makes it an international airport? Does it have any type of regularly scheduled route flights to other countries or elsewhere in the US?

It is pronounced "Shoals", but why it's called International I do not know. Probably just a marketing gimmick. Their website says that the 6,000 foot runway can handle almost any aircraft, up to a Boeing 767. It also refers to itself as the "your gateway to Central and South America and the Caribbean". I do know that they do not have an attended tower but based on the history of Galveston island I'm sure that at one point it was. I haven't found any field history on-line to give specific dates or reason though.

Even though I've only flown a CE-150 out of there in real life once, I can say from monitoring the usual traffic movements through Flytecomm, that GLS does receive a bit of bizjets and a TON of helicopter traffic, since its utilized as a hub for ferry flights to oil rigs in th gulf. The terminal area charts I have indicate
Extensive Helicopter Activity Within 10 NM of these areas
Monitor Indicated Frequencies:
Galveston, TX & Pelican Island, TX 123.050 VFR, 134.450 IFR
Brazoria Co. Airport, TX & Freeport, TX, 123.000

I think the whole idea of it being designated as an international airport versus a regional or executive airport has something to do with the facilities that are there and it being capable of sustained international traffic, though I'm probably missing something! I noticed the tower there too- I think it does get used every once in a while, but officially, its still "Galveston Traffic, November 9803 Alpha turning base for Runway 35, to land..."

As someone who grew up in Galveston, I can verify that it is pronounced "Shoals." It was always "Scholes Field" when I lived there, and I think it was briefly called "Galveston International Airport at Scholes Field." GLS hasn't had scheduled service in close to 20 years.

I believe it has the "International" designation because U.S. Customs services are available (but only on call, and this is probably due to the existence of the Port of Galveston). I'm fairly certain that the tower at GLS was attended in the past, but the facility has been around a pretty long time.
