But why has this been an ongoing problem across their long haul fleet for the last 6 months? Surely it can't just be bad luck?

It hasn't been an ongoing problem for the last 6 months. You are linking cancellations resulting from different issues, to the ones that are now arising due to upgrade of the 767s, maintenance overruns and to a lesser degree to the knock-on effect of the weather problems of late last month.

Last year's issues are resulted from management decisions and seeking to implement a schedule that didn't fit in with staffing levels among other issues. These issues at that time were resulting in significant delays and night stops. The decision then was to cancel some services in the lead up to the winter schedule and try to get things back to a manageable level, which had happened.

Over the Christmas and New Year's holiday period things went relatively well, but in the past few weeks, BA has had to deal with other issues which have now led to the current situation. As has been said before, BA isn't perfect and we don't pretend to be.

They must be able to do the UK-Tampa run without the almost obligatory fuel stop in Bangor, Maine. I checked FlyteComm.com for signs of transient flights at BGR and saw none. Maybe it's only when tour carriers use 757s.

BGR gets a TON of troop charters...DC-10s, 757-200s, 737-800s, 757-300s, and MD-11s just about every day. It does surprise me that the MD-11s (World) have to stop at BGR.
