Ghost Plane

Mon Feb 14, 2005 11:21 am

There is a 727 parked in the middle of the field at IND. It's been there for months -- all white, no insignia, no markings. Is this the Marie Celeste of the aviation world???? It looks ready to leave, but no one to fly it -- every time I fly in and out of Indy, the ghost is sitting there -- ready, but nothing

Does anyone know what this plane is?

I think I might have found your answer on our own DB,

Ex 169FE. This plane is always here in this same spot whenever I see it. I was told it is used for practice scenarios for the fire squad and others.

If this is correct then this would be your a 1966 727 that was listed with FedEx from 98' to 04'. Have no clue who the former owner could have been. Will do more research for ya and I'll get back ASAP.

Hope this helps!

Yes, this is the 'ghost' -- and on a rainy foggy night, it sure is a ghost -- thanks for any information

UPDATE:

This aircraft actually has some pretty cool history.

The aircraft is a former United Airlines 727 EX:N7059U.

On Feb. 6, 1986 this a/c was on approach to ORD. When the gear was extended the crew received a warning stating that the nose gear did not extract. Through manual efforts the gear still stayed in place and the a/c was forced to make a nose-gear-up landing. The landing was safe and the a/c only suffered minor damage.

If this a/c is being used for training I have a feeling that she's met her end. At least she went in style instead of being forced into the jaws of death AKA the desert where too much sun and a lot of dirt create an old, over tanned, dirty bird that probably won't see the skies again.

It's a bummer but a reality as well..

Thanks again.

'Ghost aircraft' often have different reasons for their beings. You have a/c that the owner defaulted or went into bankruptcy and owed a lot of money to a leasing company or where a former owner owed airport access, maintenance or storage fees. Also, could be an a/c that where the ownership is disputed, may have been involved in a tax or drug seizure, may have been owned by criminals or by a company that is under criminal inditement.

Thanks for all the answers -- I do enjoy seeing the 'ghost' when I fly in or out of Indy, and I most appreciate the story of her history

Sentinmental here in a way, I do prefer seeing a ghost plane this way, then in the desert

Last year I flew T9 to PIE for vacation and there was a DC-9 parked outside the now former Southeast hangar. It's probably not there anymore but does anyone know what I am talking about?
