Mon Feb 14, 2005 7:38 pm

Hi all,

Got some great help before - need some advice on Cambodia.

ANYONE know of an observation deck, spotting location, or aviation activies worth looking at the airport?

Thanks again in advance!

As far as activity goes - dont expect too much!!!!

When I went PNH-BKK recently on a TG 737 we were the only jet on stand!!!! The rest were an assortment of (very rickerty) turboprops! We taxiied out towards the runway and were then held there for over 5 mins when EVENTUALLY a MH 737 showed up from KUL. We then preceded the taxi straight down the runway itself (with the MH 737 still active at the other end!!!!!!).

As at that time I recently finished working on the ramp at MAN I found it half amusing and half a bit worrying  Nuts. I guessed it must have been a 'one-in and one-out' policy for jets!!!!

The moral of the story is that PNH is not BKK or SIN so don't expect to run out of camera film!!!!!

As for hotels - if you want the upper end of the scale try the Hotel Phnom Penh on the northern end of the main road called Monivong. You cannot miss it - it has HOTEL PHNOM PENH spelt out in huge red flowers in the entrance. If you want the lower end (like I did!!) you will not have to search to far and wide.

Feel free to ask me anything more - I have loads of info - including the bigggest map of Phnom Penh you ever did see right next to me!!

If our votes really made a difference politicians would not let us have them.

This maybe a little off-topic, however if you are flying more than 7 days from now, I'd advise you to invest in the Lonely Planet guide for Cambodia. Whilst I am registered here and put my views forward quite frequently, somehow spending excess time around Pochentong airport seems disrepectful to myself.

Phnom Penh and Cambodia offer much, much more in my opinion.

Although, this was the place where I took my only ever 717 flight.  Smile

Having written this, you get a reasonable view from within the departure lounges, although the check in desks (well my one) didn't open more than two hours in advance of the scheduled departure time.

I truly hope you enjoy your trip. One of the more interesting places in the world and one that is undergoing a fair bit of change at the moment.
