AC To Lease Ex-BWIA A340

Mon Feb 14, 2005 11:04 pm

AC will lease an BWIA A340-312 (MSN 048) from IFLC starting this march. I know that AC is looking for used A340/B767's to accommodate its international expansion, but why an -312 with cfm56-5c3's ? All of AC's A343's are -313X increased gross weight versions. I guess AC isn't planning on using this plane on its YYZ-NRT or DEL flights. I assume it will receive AC's new c/s and maybe new seats with IFE.

If you can find any 343-313x's around that are available let AC know, they'll likely take them as well. They've been scouring the market for months looking for extra widebody lift. There are more commonalities with this acft than say some of the 777-200's that are parked right now. (trained pilots for one) It may not be suitable for the routes you mentioned but there are plenty of others it will fit in nicely with. It will likely sport the new colours, but as for the new IFE, I doubt it. Replacement isn't due to start until Sept., only new acf from the factory will have the new system this summer. very true! A340-313X are in great demand and it is hard to find a used one. Lately AI had to give up and lease ex-UA B777 as no A343 were available.
It is rumoured that SA is about to dispose of A340-200 and couple of private Indian carriers like 9W or S2 are trying to lay their hands on them. Nothing final as yet, so AC might as well give it a try.

Further to Aseem's post, it now looks like SAA wants to lease out it A340-300s upon delivery and is pitching those aircraft through Airbus to Jet Airways. This according to Air Transport Intelligence.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the A343 in question is ex Air Jamaica (MSN 048), and will fly as fin #983. If I recall, two former AC A340-300's were returned to the lessor, one being sent to BW, and one to JM. Seating and galley configurations should be compatible to AC's existing fleet.

Given the dire aircraft shortage, the aircraft will most likely receive a new paint job, but new seating, interiors and IFE on all aircraft is not slated to commence until the spring. Don't see the 340's being pulled for a retrofit until the next 'C' check or until the next low peak travel period being next fall.

I have a feeling the new plane will be used for flights YYZ-GRU. What are other potential candidates?

YYZ-TLV in the summer is another possibility, for the lift and a tad more range than a 763.

I doubt these planes are going to get IFE since the current presumption is that AC's new fleet plan will start bringing in either 773ERs or A340-600HGWs in 2006.

Considering the new YYZICN 3 weekly and YYZPEK 4 weekly.. perhaps the aircraft will go there instead of TLV and GRU  Smile

According to my records BWIA have 2 A340's as below:

9Y-JIL A340-313 016 ex G-VSKY (VIR) Del 230104
9Y-TJN A340-313 093 ex C-FTNP (ACA) Del 0602

Therefore one used to belong to Air Canada!

Regarding deployment of the A340's. From marketing's point of view, the priorities are as follows on existing routes:

ASIA (removal of 763's from most/all Asia routes)
SYD (year round)
GRU
TLV (seasonally and during Jewish Holiday periods)

Still convinced that the A340 is coming from JM, who is downsizing to reflect their current difficulties. (Eliminating MBJ-LHR/MAN & LHR-HAV). AC would love to re-lease 9Y-TJN as it is still in AC seating (32/252) and galley configuration.

Won't these 2 new routes actually require slightly more than 1 343? Ie, can 1 343 be turned quickly enough for 7 straight days to handle these long routes? Isnt the block time on each segment 10-12 hours?

I wonder if AC is also looking for used RR 333's? These could handle YVR-NRT and YVR-KIX. I know AC briefly scheduled the 333 on 2 weekly YVR-NRT last summer but I don't know if any were actually operated.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

AC's 330's never made it across the pacific (yet), despite the earlier planned schedule ex YVR on AC003 (NRT). Think NW beat us to the punch, being the first A330 trans-pacific operator.

The 343 is definitely making YYZ-PEK and YYZ-ICN possible. The flights don't commence till June and July respectively, but the aircraft is said to be joining the fleet in March.

NW uses the longer range 332 on the pacific routes and the shorter range 333 on atlantic routes. Still no carrier uses the 333 on pacific.

Some are you are dead wrong.
AC used the A333 on some days of the week on the YVR-NRT run last summer. AC was the first over the Pacific with A330, of any type.
NW is the first and only A332 carrier over the Pacific.

AC could pull the A343 off the YVR-NRT run and put it on longer runs and sub-in a A333 on the YVR-NRT. The loss of a A333 on the trans-Atlantic run can be done with extra 763 flights, if necessary.

I never knew AC's A333 flew to Asia, I thought the only A333 flight where to YYZ.

6Y-JMC (ex 3B-NAT, Air Mauritius) A340-312 will be leased to Air Canada as fin #983.

JM is returning one of its A340's to the lessor, so more than likely Air Canada will be getting that one. THe only A340 BW was suppose to return becuase it was short term lease, is 9Y-JIL, ex VS bird.
There is something special about planes....

For the record I think it was Canada 3000 that crossed the pacific with A330's first....

Slawko,

Did Canada 3000 actually make it all the way across the Pacific with their 330s, or did they just make it part way?

Oh, wait a minute - they did serve SYD, didn't they? So, I guess they did make it across Smile

The C3 332 skeds to SYD all stopped at HNL. The 332 does not have the range for YVR-SYD. So technically, since the C3 332 was not nonstop across the Pacific, it doesn't count!  Smile Actually, C3 also used the 752 on YVR-HNL-Nadi-SYD, and HNL-Raratonga-AKL.
