717 To South America

To all:

With the 717 embarking on a major marketing tour of 6 countries in South America including a stop at the airshow in Chile, I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts/insights as to possible sales prospects for the 717 amongst South American airlines. It seems to me that Boeing has tried this tactic before but has gotten little return for their efforts.
Perhaps it is time for them to launch the much mooted -100 & -300 version of the plane to increase its appeal.

Aeromexico & Mexicana are going to announce a joint order for either the 50 A318/A320 or 50 717/737NG. Boeing seems to have this one in the bag with Delta's help.

Aerolineas Argentinas will order 20 737NGs to replace the 737-200s. The A-320 has lost already.

Aersca will order 8 737NG & 12 717 before May.

The List goes on with few Airbus wins.

Though it was said that Aerolineas Argentinas was goint to order about 15 B737NGs, with it's current financial situation, I highly doubt that this will be happenning anytime soon. Aerolineas was interested in the 717 but having no sister was a drawback as stated in the Airways article.

As far as the -100 and -300, that would be a good idea. Doesn't Boeing or anybody realize how many MD80/DC9 are still flying out there? It would be easy for an airline to switch to the 717 family. It makes sense to me. Aerolineas Argentinas, Austral, Dinar and soon American Falcon in Argentina still use MD88/81s and DC-9-30s. And like DeltaAir mentioned Aeromexico has a large fleet of them as well.

Airbus Still In Running For Aerolinas Order!

Though you did a fine job of quoting mark's site, delta air, this is one of the few cases in which the latest news coming from Airbus and from regional reports suggests that Airbus does indeed remain in the running. --As always lets wait and see.

Mexico is still up in the air, Airbus could win this one on fine, fine pricing.

Hoping for PW6000 on 717 before it picks up though. That way when it does, they'll have the better engine.---my opinion, no debate welcomed.

Who knows what can happen?

I think that Aerolineas (If they get their act straight) will go for the A-319's and the reason is that it already has the A-340's. Since they have common cockpit types then it will make sense to go with the family. Just like Lan Chile did!

It is difficult to say what the Mexican airlines will do.
AeroMexico is closer to Boeing because they already purchase their 757's and 767's products. The MD-80 fleet is about 10 years old average. So at this time it's not that important, but the DC-9's are getting old but they are very well maintained.

Mexicana already operates some 15 Airbus A320's, and their 727-200 which were purchased new in the late 70's and early 80's are getting pretty old. They are very close to retirement age.


I don't know but this is my theory! Don't take my word for it.

Both Airlines will be sold of by the Mexican goverment. Possible bidder for AeroMexico. Offcourse Delta. Delta will advise AeroMexico to purchase Boeing. AeroMexico will go for the 717 and NG 737

Mexicana will also be sold off, and possible bidders are the members of the Star alliance. Maybe United and Lufthansa. Who knows? They will go with Airbus.


And something that I have been thinking about lately. Mexico just signed a free trade agreement with the EU.
and it also has the free trade agrement with the U.S. Which leads me to believe that the Mexican gov. will split the order evenly so that it satisfies both parties. Mexicana with Airbus and AeroMexico with Boeing.

Who knows? time will tell.
