Pax Wanting Defunct Airlines

Wed Feb 16, 2005 8:32 am

Reading the post about TWA, made me think of an episode of Airline I saw the other night. It was the one about the drunk guy (yes, I know, standard Airline...) going to FLL. Bragging he had his own business etc etc etc... Well, anyways when WN wouldn't take him, he said that he was gonna go fly TWA, to which the gate agent said that they are no longer flying. Then he wanted Eastern, to which the gate agent said that they aren't flying anymore either.

Anybody got stories like this?

That guy was.....interesting. I liked Chris the WN Supervisor's comment after it was all over: "He had some "interesting" stories. I wonder how many of them are true?".

Every time I fly with my family, my mother starts with her usual "I remember back in the day when Ozark served wine and cheese on the plane", before we even leave the house.....luckily she doesn't mention that while on the plane. Wouldn't want any short tempered F/A's!

Drunkard: "I was in the service, and I know what it is to be a man."
Chris: "This has nothing to do with your manhood, sir".

--Later--
D: "I'm a transexual and I have t*ts right here."
C: "Sir, let's not have that talk right here."

True story - I'm staying at the Westin at LAX a few months ago, and flipping channels on the TV, they've got a few static-filled channels that contain flight departure information, obviously from some REALLY old black-and-white displays.

Anyway, one channel said "American Airlines"..."United Airlines" was next...and finally..."Trans World Airlines."  Big grin

Hmmm....AA still uses an old B&W system from TWA here in STL.

1- That gentleman was a peice of work. Chris is extremely level-headed and even-tempered to have not called the cops and to at least **attempt** to mantain some semblance of rational conversation with him, even through the incoherent rambling (manhood/dad is a lawyer/taxidriver/missing...)

2- I miss the old B&W systems...does color actually do anything useful? UA at LAX and WN at DTW still use B&W if I'm not mistaken. AA just had off-the-shelf televisions in some of the boxes at LAX and SFO.

The TV thing, IMO, looks very unprofessional.

You don't NEED color on a flight monitor...but the ones at STL are sooo old that they are sorta blurred and hard to read.

Codasco -

I agree with you there on the TV thing-- thought I was alone  Smile. I've also seen some nasty examples of burn-in... Usually it's not too hard to read, plus I kinda have fun trying to read the info that's been burned in. Yes, I'm strange that way.

Personally, the TV thing wouldn't look quite as unprofessional if (a) the TVs fit in the holes and (b) they were all the same make/model.

I can't remember if it was LAX or SFO but with four across it was "original style" then Panasonic with black cabinet slightly too tall for the cutout then Apex (or some other off-brand) with a grey cabinet, and then another "original style".

I know it was a cost-savings thing, but really the "let's see what we can find for under $100 at Target" idea isn't the best way to hold on to a professional image.

at Terminal D's Ticket Counters in PHL, we were waiting in line at the CO/HP ticket line, and the TV's were very blurry for reading the text, and they were in color too.

Even if it's in color, CRT displays can wear out and look bad. I found the plasma screens at shoulder height that they have in CMH to be very very easy to read.

Wow, we're off topic  Smile

Yes, very.

BTW -- plasma is VERY susceptable to burn-in if not treated very carefully. Even the "network bugs" (superimposed TV station logos, usually in the lower right corner) used by most (US) television stations/networks can do damage after as little as a few hours.

I'll be interested to see how they hold up for airport use long term.

Years ago my brother-in-law worked ticket counter for UA in ICT, he had a passenger rush up to the counter. The customer said "I need to get to Chicago in the worst way!!".
My brother-in-law told him, "To get to Chicago in the worst way, you need to step down to the TWA counter".

The thing I notice most about the old green-screens at STL is there is always one that has lost the horizontal or vertical hold and the information is traveling across the screen....AA's plasma displays by the security lines are nice though.

I like the color displays used in TPA. They have a good contrast and it's easy to read and follow. DL displays in ATL are awesome. AA displays in DFW look old and so 1980 ish.

I don't remember exactly what brand they were, but the (I think) CRT's used at BCN are VERY nice too...just as nice as the plasma at CMH (which might actually be LCD. I don't know for sure, but they have them all over--for advertisements AND flight info. The 2 times I've been to CMH, the row of monitors above the escalators all had Windows XP screen savers running..not very useful).

How about the airport wanting a defunct airline? After Southwest closed down TranStar in '87, the LAX Shuttle drivers still had to call out TranStar at the stop for T-1 until it was taken off the overhead signs. It was months later that they finally did, and passengers sometimes razzed the drivers that TranStar was no more, and didn't he know that.

Some of the frequent flyers must have gotten tired of it, cause one day I was sitting there when the driver called out the airlines for T-1 ...

Passenger: "TranStar, yep that's me!"
Driver: "You've gotta be kidding me."
Passenger: "No, YOU'VE gotta be kidding ME!"
