There's a story on the Israeli news site "ynet" that El Al just signed on with Boeing to install Wi-Fi access on its fleet of 744's and 772's.

They say installation will commence in June 2005 and be complete by the end of 2006. Expected cost: $10 to $30 for the duration of the flight.

I just hope they DON'T enable cell phones. Its one thing to e-mail, surf and IM - which everyone can do privately and quietly. Cell phones will cause havoc, especially on long-haul flights.

I think that's a reasonable price range for the ability to use high-speed internet while moving across the world at 500 MPH.

I couldn't agree more. Imagine sitting in a plane for 10 hours and the person next to you having a relationship crisis over her cellphone with her boyfriend... AAAARGH!

The technology for cells and WiFi is quite different. WiFi is enabled by carrying the routing equipment along in the plane. For cell access they would probably have to install a cell antenna on the plane. The latter has not been tested if nothing else.

Actually, it has been tested, according to my post (the link on it still works):
