Cornell University To Get NWA Service

Wed Feb 16, 2005 11:27 pm

Hi All,

I'm thrilled to say that northwest will commence flights at Tomkins County Regional Airport in May. For quite some time US Airways has been the only carrier to serve the airport. Roundtrip prices at US Airways to LGA, PIT, PHL from ITH are as high as $700, but can reach as low as $250.

Prices probably will not go down due to NW lack of convenient east coast services, but those who wish to fly to Europe or Asia will find the new Detroit flights very suitable.

Thanks for posting this, Flybyguy. Guess I missed the post about it last week, so this was great news for me. I believe ITH has been a USAirways / USAir / Allegheny monopoly for decades... or did Mohawk and/or Empire fly there at one time?

Yeah, NYCFlyer, hate it when people post rude comments like that. Not everbody reads this board 24/7 and has each post cross-referenced in his / her mind!

Hope you will continue posting any info on ITH you come across, Flybyguy!

As the one who posted it last week, its OK. Always glad to see more press about ITH. (Mine was deleted because I didn't cite the article I posted...OOPS!)

Though the title should be changed to ITHACA or ITH gets NW Service.

ITH needs more service, 70% of travelers from the area go to SYR/BGM/ELM and as a former airport employee albeit not for Usairways I know how hard the airport/county have worked. Comair almost came in with RJ's to CVG but then we didn't get the grant (three times now we didn't get it). Good to see another Cornelian on here though, on www.cornell.edu a CU MBA grad helped bring NW to IThaca. The airport at one time had five airliners (empire, Piedmont, Usair, continental express, TWA express) and apparently Pan Am Express served ITH in the mid 1980's. Boy do I miss those DC-9's and F100s that US used to bring in here to PIT! Maybe NW will expand the service if its successful like they have significantly in ELM. (five flights, almost if not all RJ's from a few SAAB340's). I'll cross my fingers. -Matt in KITH

great news for ITH - seems pretty similar to the situation in HVN, too, which is getting new NWA service. I'm a Yale grad, and HVN and ITH serve very similar markets, both are small cities strongly dependent on University traffic as the primary "local business." Great news for Ivy League airports! Maybe the CEO of NWA has kids at Cornell or Yale, LOL.

and N62NA - totally agree w/you - who reads this 24/7?

A few of us come close Big grin.

Also, there is a search function, and though it is not always reliable, it should be used. Also, if you post something similar to what has been posted recently, there will be similar links that show up on the submission screen and you can see if your thread is in conflict.

Um, my post wasn't rude. I was merely stating a fact -- it was covered here last week. I did not mean to offend anyone by simply pointing that out.

Seriously - a bit of a coincidence that NW's starting service to both HVN and ITH in the same time frame. I suppose the Hanover, NH flights will start a few months later...

I think NW's CFO is also a Cornellian! Ithaca could sustain a lot more flights if we didn't have so much "leakage" to surrounding airports. Alfred Kahn the man behind deregulation and Ithacan regularly will take a limo to SYR, take B6 to JFK and a limo back from SYR on the return and still have it be significantly less then if he took the direct ITH-LGA-Matt in KITH
