Why Not RJs @ DuPage Near ORD

Fri Feb 18, 2005 2:27 am

I guess this thread is for the Chicago market.

DuPage Airport is a general aviation airport about 10 miles SW of O'hare. It has a 7570' runway. It is currently set up for business, charter , and general aviation. There is one BBJ that is parked there every now and then.

So I was just wondering if there has ever been any serious thought to bringing in RJ sched. service to DuPage? I know the NIMBY contingent would most likely be too powerful now or in the near future. But with the advent of smaller and quieter passenger jets, combined with the prevailing FAA doctine of point to point service options, DPA might someday be attractive to airlines and consumers alike.

Will the corporate jet tenants hold sway if an airline expresses interest?

I doubt that DuPage is likely to get service. It is really far from downtown Chicago, and those suburbs around there can't provide enough O/D with ORD and MDW so close. MDW is already the closer airport to down town and with the new terminal is less crowded and good for quick in and out compared to the ORD megalopolis. Dupage is 30 miles west of Chicago, which is just too far away.

The only thing that small airports like that offer are quick in and out service, but this is only useful if they are close to the city. There are other airports in the country, BFI most notable, that are close to the city center, but don't have any commercial service. I doubt that Dupage is going to get anything unless ORD and MDW become heavily slot restricted. Now if Meigs Field opened up with a 7,000 ft runway again without strict regulations, then yes it would see service, but the city of Chicago has destroyed that possibility.

Many large cities have airports like this that act as the primary GA airports for the area. There is no way all the GA traffic that wants to go to that area of the Chicago region could go into ORD, thus why they fly into DuPage. The NYC area has TEB (Teterboro) Detroit/Oakland County) has PTK (Oakland-Pontiac) that acts as a reliever by taking charters, biz-jets, flight instruction, and cargo away from the major airline facilities. These airports don't have the infrastructure to handle airline service, and generally it isn't worth the expense to go to such.

Anyways, all you would get in RJ's from other legacy airline's hubs, which is somewhat pointless when you have 2 major hubs at ORD and a large LCC at MDW that between them and the others can get you pretty much anywhere in the world nonstop.

It took a lot of effort for RFD to get commerical air service back. They got Hooters and soon NW CRJ's to DTW.

I remember when I lived in Atlanta, there was occassional talk about the northern suburbs getting some light commercial service...the talk usually focused on PDK. I always thought LZU would be a better option since they expanded it and it was further north.
At some point, I'd like to see just one of these large GA airports (near a big airport city) get some commercial service. Wake me when it happens.
