Song Airline Or Pan Am

Fri Feb 18, 2005 2:58 pm

With DL dropping 4 aircraft types, will some of them go to Song? I know Song flies the B-752, exclusively, with what 199 seats?

Could Song pick up some of DLs retiring B-762s?

Could Pan Am, at PSM, pick up some of DLs retiring B-762s or B-733Gs?

I believe Pan Am still only flies B-722s with winglets. Don't they have something like 7-10 of them with only 125 seats? Replacing the B-722s with B-733Gs would still have the same number of seats, and burn less fuel.

No chance. Song has a single-type fleet for a reason, keeping costs down. Adding another aircraft type would require spending money for training, maintenance, equipment and other necessary stuff. Also, the seating of the 762 doesn't offer much advantages. With 199 seats on the 752, DL has one FA per 49,25 pax (limit is 50). On the 762, in a possible 220-seat layout, it would be one FA per 44 pax.

Not realistic either. Don't forget that those 722s are being flown by non-unionized Boston-Maine Airways pilots, that used to fly J-31s, and neither does PA III, which actually is more of a PA IV, the money nor the resources to add an additional plane type, let alone a widebody.

The whole purpose of elimninating 4 aircraft types is to cut costs. As Song is Delta, giving Song one of these four types would do nothing to cut costs.
As DAL400ER correctly points out, to bring in another type would only increase costs.

I do wonder however what DL is going to do to replace the 4 types..........we are talking about quite a few aircraft here.

I was under the assumtion that Songs MX was done by Delta. I had also thought that Song didn't have it's own O.C. so having one fleet type doesn't really do anything for costs except maybe for F/A training. They're still flown by DL pilots on DL payscales, handled by DL ramp and MX done by DL mechanics.

One can only assume Delta mainline eats the cost.

i've seen a lot of discussion about how the 762's have serious corrosion issues. If that is the case are these birds headed for scrap or will they go to the freighter route?

Wait, what's a B-733G? I've heard of the B733, the Boeing 737-300, and the B73G, the Boeing 737-700, but not the B-733G.  Confused

Pan Am is right now comtemplating a move to Florida and they will most likely end up buying used Fokker 100's for their new routes .They are available at very cheap rates and they are available for delivery immiadetely.

The 73G (733) are DL's 737-300 gotten from I believe Germania Airlines with glass cockpits. The G used by DL is to distinguish these craft from the other 300's they have.

not to be a stick in the mud, but a 737-300 is never referred to as a 73G that is only for 737-700.

I bveleive that DL bouth most of their -300's new from Boeing, They have the limited glass cockpit not the 5 panel total glass cockpit like the E170's.

I would think DL's 737-300's would be great for some people to acquire, Including Pan AM II should they be able to keep it together that long.

Actually not. Only 5 733s have been bought directly from Boeing. The rest is ex-Western or ex-Germania

Interesting about the Germania planes. I did know they inherited a lot of 737-300 from the Western Merger. I remember being in ORD in 1988 seeing a Western 737-300 with an interim DL paint scheme.

I am not sure why you say they call them 73G on the website all the flights say 737-300.

All of there on-line schedule and downloadable schedules also say 737-300, even Orbitz says just 737, even their flight plans filed are for 737-300 (i have a subsciption to FBOweb and Flighttracker.com) where do they ever use 73G, internally?

This was a FLiFo on Delta.com,

Departing City (Airport) Chicago (Chicago-O'Hare Intl)
Departure Gate L7(ORD)
Carrier Delta
Equipment Type Boeing 737-300
Arriving City Salt Lake City (Salt Lake City Intl)
Arriving Gate D5(SLC)
Flight Distance (miles) 1245

The terminology of 73G at DL just signifies 737-300 Glass Cockpit. It is an internal thing and will not show up anywhere. They came from Germania. The Germania craft are used primarally on the LGA-DCA/BOS shuttle. Basically, it is confusing, but it used to identify the glass cockpit 733's.

BTW, 73G is used for the 700 series so as to separate it from the 737-100 or 737. 737-600/700/800/900 are all 737NG but there is no confusion using 736,738,739.............so DL's use of the term 73G actually preceeds Boeings designation............now it just causes confusion when talking about the two entirely different aircraft.

So what happens when Delta has no more 757's to give Song? What plane do you think they will operate then (this is all in the way future)?

Thanks

Well atleast they could add another color then just green to their aircraft. Does anyone know if they plan to add more colors like Blue, Orange, or Red to the B757-200s?

I think orange and purple because if you look on their site at the shop, you see some things that they offer in green, orange, and purple so I guess they are eventually planning on it. In a few years or so, I guess.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the speculation on A.net a while ago was that they had originally planned on painting the a/c all different colors, but ended up painting them all green because it was cheaper.

Unfortunately, that is true. Originally, the livery would have been as colorful as the seats, but now it's only lime. I still hope that the batch of 12 757s Song is now getting will be painted in another color, but I doubt it.
