Fri Feb 18, 2005 10:33 pm

Hello everyone

I have always wondered which international airport has on average, the highest taxes or is reputed to have the highest taxes .

Is there some website that indicated this infor or would anybody know from past experience ?

Angelairways, ZRHs taxes are around 30$! LHR for example must be at least three times as high!

Anywhere in Japan will have high taxes, Hong Kong isn't cheap either, nor is Toronto.

a flight between lhr-jfk will cost you £82 or $150 taxes between them, i think JFK, LHR and CDG to name few are the most taxed in the world.

Capri, taxes at CDG are FAR from being the highest in the world !!! where did you get that ?

ATH taxes are ridiculously high ! they were raised many years ago to finance the new E.Venizelos Airport... The airport is now in service for a few years, mostly financed by the European Union, and the PAX continue to pay the same taxes !  Nuts

Sorry I was talking of not just passenegr tax but overall charges (including those to the airline, passed on to the passenger eventually.)

but yes, when you think of it, LHR is higher...

Sydney Airport is not cheap too, probably the most expansive in Australia. LHR, JFK, NRT are amongst the most expansive airports tax in the world.

Airlines complain about the high costs in AMS all the time, and the high landing fees were one of the reasons for U2 to discontinue AMS-NCE-AMS and AMS-BCN-AMS.

Zurich has high taxes but by far not the highest in Europe. LHR has much higher taxes and I think FRA is about the same. In the other parts of the world there are plenty of airports which have much higher taxes, for example NRT , HKG and others.

AJO:

On the other hand, I think high parking fees in CDG prompted RG to extend its flight GRU-CDG to AMS. It was more expensive to park the a/c in CDG than to fly the short leg CDG-AMS.

LHR definitely has some of the highest passenger taxes in the world. For longhaul flights from LHR you are looking at anything between 60 GBP to 90 GBP (don't know why it varies so much), nothing below that though. And having flown out of LHR numerous times, i've never paid anything less than 60 GBP in taxes in addition to the fare.

I'll give you the number for CCS:

Airport Tax: 73,500 BS
Departure Tax: 29,400

So about $50 total depending on where you exchange

Hey Venezuela747 - I agree with you mean about CCS. I flew CCS-BOG recently and was asked to pay $46US at check-in!!!!!!

Of course I had spent all my Bolivars. Things got even worse when I was told there was no ATM that accepted international banking cards.

There was me (poor little 23-year old Brit  Sad) on my own not really knowing what to do. I had to change a travelers check.

So how about the award for most expensive AND most inconvenient to pay?

Would LGW have the same taxes as LHR? I just booked an award ticket, IAH-LGW return, and the taxes per person were:

U.S. Customs User Fee: $5.00
U.S. Immigration User Fee: $7.00
U.S. APHIS User Fee: $4.95
Security Service Fee: $5.00
UK Air Passenger Duty: $75.54
UK Passenger Service Charge: $13.60

A grand total of $111.09 for my "free" ticket!

Whoa, KL662 - my parents booked an award Onepass ticket a month ago LGW-IAH-LGW and the cost was $72.08 each. A difference of $39.01?

Breakdown as follows:

U.S. Customs User Fee: $5.00
U.S. Immigration User Fee: $7.00
U.S. APHIS User Fee: $4.95
Security Service Fee: $2.50
UK Air Passenger Duty: $38.70
UK Passenger Service Charge: $13.93

Does it make a difference what country you depart from initially? They are still flying a return trip though... Biggest difference is in the UK Air Passenger Duty figure.

Or did you book a Standard reward or Easypass reward? My parents were fortunate enough to snag a 50,000 mile economy round trip.

Athens Eleftherios Venizelos is ridiculously expensive and among the most expensive airports in the world.
Even when the old Hellenicon was active we then had to pay for the famous "spatosimon" (tax for the construction of the new airport) a large percentage of the total ticket's taxes.

Miami has one of the highes in the US!!

NO wonder FLL has so much traffic!!

In the world, LHR, not only the airport but if you take a trip in London, they tax you even for walking on the street!!

Im just kidding.. love London though.

The PFC at Miami is $4.50, the same as at least 20 other airports in the US that I can think of, including some ridiculously small fields like Columbus, MS and huge fields like ATL.

I was trying to see what the prices for a flight to ORD are for the summer ex DUS. And when the SK flights came up via CPH, the tickets were around €560 but the taxes rang up at €162!!!! What a rip-off! And of course you have to add the booking fee and fuel surcharge...
That's the end of me wanting to fly with them!

Interesting. It was a standard BusinessFirst award. I went back and did a test bookings of standard and EasyPass Economy awards, and the taxes came out to ~$70 for both.

I had no idea that they based taxes on class of service -- wonder if that's just a UK thing? Begs the question: what happens when you get an upgrade? AFAIK, CO doesn't collect extra taxes when an upgrade to C clears. Seems kind of odd to me.

According to your definition of "taxes", from reply 16:
I should have been more specific... i meant passenger taxes....the ones we have to pay on addition of the plane ticket

then Canadian airports in general will by high on the list. Here is an example of YUL fares before and after the taxes and surcharges:

YUL-YHZ: $64-fare, total price $115 (80% over the fare charged by the airline)
YUL-PBI: $99-fare, total price $198 (100% over the airline fare, isn't this just insane ??)

My two cents.

Cheers,

I've haven't flown to Canada very much, however I did make 10 trips through YUL in '02/'03 and was mildly annoyed when I was shaken-down for an additional $10Cdn before I could clear U.S. Customs and airport security. Is that a provincial or federal fee/tax?

LHR varies because if you are in premium cabin you pay an increased rate....

I paid £96 in taxes on each of two tickets I bought recently on LHR-CPT. In economy on the same route the taxes are £76.90

Canadian airports are easily the worst!!!!! Just look at Jetsgo's loonie fares. You pay a loonie or twonie to the airline, and $150 in taxes.

Don't forget too that some countries or territories also charge an exit visa fee of $10-30 USD. I would suggest that Canadian and London UK area airports have the highest fees for airports for many flyers.
