Gulf Air - Any Developements?

Sat Feb 19, 2005 9:08 pm

Hi

I know I'm the last person who should be asking this, but does anyone know of any new developements/expansion plans at Gulf Air in the pipeline.

The only last rumour I heard was that Gulf Air were returning a few A320s back to Oasis aircraft leasing and that they offered to sell the few oldest A340s to Airbus.

Other than this I've not heard anything really. Know anything new ?

It must be a couple of years old by now but Gulf did announce that they were going to make the A330-200 the workhorse of their fleet. I waited eagerly for a large order but it never came. I guess that idea is dead and buried now.

Is Gulf Traveller still going? They flew into DAR for a while (taking it over from Gulf proper) but soon dropped the route. EK are now daily...

Perhaps a refurb of the A343 to remove any hints of SQ that are floating around i.e SQ logos ect is in order.

Aren't GF trying to get in better shape as they havn't been performing the best over the last few years. I know they've been getting better so maybe an A330 order is a while off.

The ex-SQ A343's are probably some of the nicest in the fleet, flew on one from Bahrain-SIN in December. Noticed 'Raffles Class' insignia on curtains to biz class etc. giving away its ex-SIA roots!

Also, Gulf always seemed to board the A/C through one door (A-door) only. Any reason for this? In the event it wasn't much hassle as biz class seemed almost empty. Loads overall were very low it seems (circa 60%) compared to BA/SQ/MH on UK-->S.E.Asia routes esp. over the christmas / new year period.

Thank you speedbird128...sounds like GF are downsizing and all rumours regarding fleet expansion have also been put on hold.

I've also heard GF Traveller flights to Birmingham which were to commence this April have also been put on hold due to economic reasons.

I thought they were doing well. Will all the fierce competition in the region, looks as though they might end up like a small Oman Air.

Yes you are right, I read this myself in many Airline magazines in 2003 that GF was planning on returning/selling all of its A 343s and in exchange get more A 332s and make that aircraft its sole long haul high density plane. But obviously since then plans have changed.

What I would like from GF is to trade in some of its A 343s and get A 345s instead to fly BAH-SYD, BAH-EWR, BAH-ORD and BAH-YYZ nonstop in order for it to effectively compete with QR and EK especially in the region.

Plus, I have a feeling that the same way in which QR and DOH Govt kicked GF out of DOH in 1998, Etihad and AUH Govt will do the same in 5 years time as now EY is expanding vvv rapidly and has named itself the "official national carrier of the UAE". Therefore by 2012, I wouldnt be surprised to see GF being solely based out of BAH (its main hub) and a smaller scaled operation out of MUS.

behramjee...
you should send a recommendation to the GF management ...I've read a few of your posts on other boards and found your ideas to be worthy.

But most of EK's business (and I suppose QR's as well) is transit traffic coming in from their extensive network. Do GF have the same volume? In other words, could they suck in enough people from, say, Europe to fill a 345 to Sydney?

EK-EY-GF-QR-KU are all of the same type of airlines relying heavily upon 6th freedom traffic rather than O&D traffic. The only main source of O&D traffic for these airlines comes from flights of the Indian Subcontinent, Saudi Arabia, Iran and LHR/LGW.

So to answer your question...yes there is a market for GF to fly BAH-SYD or AUH-SYD nonstop rather than via SIN. I would prefer BAH-SYD nonstop as eventually EY will be flying AUH-SYD nonstop and will I feel drive GF out of AUH.

GF has a reasonably sized EU/UK network which can feed its BAH/AUH-SYD nonstop flight. Plus these flights can be filled with Lebanese, Pakistani, Iranian and Arab pax also who can connect via their BAH hub to SYD.

Inflight service gets worse and worse.

On-time performance gets worse and worse.

Fares keep on plummeting, yields appalling (£1299 to fly LHR-SYD in J!)

Abu Dhabi rumoured to be pulling out in favour of EY.

Something's gotta give....watch this space.

That has to be a one way J class fare right? As VS-BA charge around GBP 2000+ for LHR-SYD-LHR.

I've heard they using all A340s into Dubai instead of the usual A320 as they are gaining good loads from there.

Yes this is the trend these days with GF and QR. GF flies DXB-BAH-LHR on an A 332/A 343 in order to market the concept of no change of plane, hassle free flying via BAH...the same thing QR does via DOH by flying A 330s DXB-DOH-LHR.

The planes of both GF and QR stop at their BAH and DOH hubs for 45-60 mins and are back in the air for DXB. They want to tap as much as they can into the highly lucurative DXB-LHR-DXB market and this is the best way that they can do so.

What Etihad does is fly pax to AUH and then send them to DXB in a luxury bus.

No, it's a return fare available from consolidators in the UK.

What makes LHR so important for every Gulf carrier. I can see that EK flies a lot of passengers via DXB to Pakistan, India and Australia. But that can't explain why GF and QR try to marketing LHR-DXB as a one-stop-without-change-plane destination.
There must be significant amount of O&D traffic to DXB especially from Britain. Are there so many people from the Gulf in London?

Oh yes...in the 10s of 1000s!!! Plus remember that DXB has now become a much cheaper and attractive destination for Brits on holiday as it has beaches-shopping-alcohol-good weather-massive business opportunities etc. Brits are now flocking to DXB in the 100s instead of more costlier beach holidays in Spain, Greece etc.

So alongwith the O&D ethnic traffic movement, you have holiday goers and businessmen in their 1000s flying London-Dubai-London.

Very attractive indeed...but remember GF might be purposely doing this to attract cost conscious J class pax who want to save 700-900 pounds on LHR-SYD-LHR. GF flies LHR-BAH-SIN-SYD where as VS and BA are one stop via HKG/BKK/SIN to SYD which is a much more attractive option to the J and F class pax.

Plus GFs A 343 J class product is C+ compared to VSs and BAs...GFs A 343 J class seat pitch is 50 inches with a 130-140 degree recline...only their A 332s have a B+ grade J class seat. GFs flies 2 ex SQ A 343s to SYD via SIN from BAH.

What are EKs LHR/LGW-SYD-LHR/LGW fares in J and F?

Gulf Air and Egyptair started code-sharing on each other's Egypt-UAE flights this week.

Unfortunately their is no news of the new AUH/BAH-SSH flight that was planned last year.
