Electra G-FIJV

Fri Mar 31, 2000 3:55 am

I was paging through an airliner book with photos and data of aircraft, and I was quite shocked to find a Lockheed L-188 Electra registered G-FIJV there painted in Hunting Cargo colours. Could anyone confirm my suspicions that this aircraft is the Electa that Northwest Territorial Airways used to fly under the Canadian registry CF-IJV? Any information as to the whereabouts of the aircraft, and what it is doing now would be much appreciated. Thanks.

This Electra was ex NW Territorial along with sistership G FIJR. I believe it's con no is 1129. I spent many hours working with this a/c when i worked for Hunting Cargo at EMA. After a few years it was re-registered as EI HCE and based in Dublin but when Hunting PLC sold its aviation division it was sold to Atlantic Airlines, based at Coventry, and re-registered back to G FIJV. It is still operating for Atlantic Al today along with G FIJR and a hand full of other Electras.
JR and JV were our favourite Electras because they still had their APUs fitted and were more reliable and well maintained compared to the other L188s in the fleet. Because of this they were always used for ad hoc charters and for the carrying of bloodstock. The APUs have since been removed to safe weight and costs.
Your question has also reminded my that i have got a NW Territorial flight safety card for an L188 hidden in my collection somewhere but i can't remember which a/c it came off.
It's still nice to know that people show interest in this lovely a/c as they become a less frequent sight in our skies. I personnally believe their days are numbered but who knows!

Speaking Of Electras

Fri Mar 31, 2000 11:36 am

Recently a forumite made a post about a special $50.00 fare to fly round trip in a Reeve Electra. Since I am going to Alaska this summer, I e-mailed Reeve Aleutian to ask if this fare is still available. Here is the e-mail I received in reply:

Subj: Lockheed Electra Special Fare
Date: 3/30/00 8:00:23 PM Eastern Standard Time
From: sheilat@reevecorp.com (Sheila Throckmorton)
To: Rbradle2@aol.com

Kalan Morrissette our sales manager has been out of the office on jury
duty. She normally replies to your message. We are offering a round trip
same day flight(no stop overs) on any of our Lockheed routes for $100.00
round trip. This is the year 2000 fare. It is likely this will be the
last year we will be flying this a/c in a passenger configuration and
there is a lot of interest in taking a ride. If you send us your mailing
adress we will send a route schedule and our 800 reservation line
number. Look it over and give us a call if you are interested. We call
this fare the Lockheed Enthusiasts fare. It is space available from
Anchorage but we will confirm the return trip so you will not be
stranded in the Aleutians.

Regards,
Sheila Throckmorton
Director Passenger Service

So if anybody wants to fly in a passenger Electra, this may be your last chance.

That is one great offer.

Indeed the Electra is a wonderful aircraft and with some luck the Channel Express Electra from Dublin to Cologne will pass right over here in about an hour. what a sound.

Thank you very much, Terra, I am very happy to hear IJV is still going. Before my time, in the '70's, my father was FE at NWTAir on IJV (I think he flew on IJR a few times too) so even though I have never had the pleasure of flying the L-188 I kind of have an interest in the whereabouts of "dad's Lockheed." Thanks again.
