I found this flying tomorrow

London Gatwick to Cologne/Bonn
flight 5343; dep. 07:00; arr. 09:15 £17.99
(per person)
Monday 21 February
Cologne/Bonn to London Gatwick
flight 5346; dep. 21:30; arr. 21:50 £13.49
(per person)
Cost of your selection
Airfare per adult or child
Infants under 2 years fly free, sat on an adult's lap £31.48
(per person)
Taxes and charges per adult or child£9.50
(per person)
Total amount due for 1 adult
An additional booking fee of £4.00 may apply, depending on your method of payment £40.98

i think there are 2 problems for U2 on this route:

1. They face big competition from Germanwings which offer better timings and usually cheaper price. Also, Germanwings also fly from CGN to STN which provides more flexibility for commuters between London and Cologne.

2. Germanwings give people a more reliable and better service.

Anyone has any comments?

easyJet has a higher profile than Germanwings in the UK, I'm a little surprised that prices and loads aren't higher at the last minute.
I think there isn't really that much difference travelling from STN to central London, when compared to LGW to central London.
Perhaps the 21.30 hours departure back to LGW is a little too late for business travellers and earlier flights on other airlines are preferred.

Richard,

You are right - both STN and LGW are similar when you travel from central london. Frankly I am suprised to see that the loads on easyjet may not be too good, but personally I think Germanwings just wins on the prices and service, their onboard service from the F/A are always nice, and one most important thing is people flying LCCs want the flights to be reliable - and the German wins on this,

regards.

What you must remember is that it is off-season - most routes, with the possible exception of those dominated by businesspeople, will witness lower prices in order to encourage people to fly. It's nothing unusual at this time.

....But fares are usually much higher than base fare on the day before travel, even in low season.
No need to book early, generally speaking, to get the best fare on this route.

How do we know that it is the base fare? If it has 10 seats, it would be preferable to sell them cheaply, and thereby earn something, instead of letting them going without anyone sitting on them. It's the same in a supermarket: sell your can of soup for 10p or throw it away?

easyJet advertise one way base fares on billboards and buses.
£22.99 is close to the base fare.
I suspect that the load factors on this route are unusually low, even at this point in the low season.
Last winter 2003-04 U2 route LGW-Bilbao had low fares at the last minute and this route did not return for winter 2004-05.
Do you get seat allocation on Germanwings, is their service really much better?

Hi Richard,

No, we don't have seat allocation at Germanwings, what I think the most important issue is that they have better on-time performance. Really, I never got delayed on any of the Germanwings flights but if you go to LGW to watch the easyjets, you will see how long the list for delayed flights are - and if these LCCs are delayed, you get nothing, not even a meal vocher. I know this is the rule of the game, but why not choose something that has a much better on-time performance?
