MIA Says Mystery Airline Commits To Flying MIA-CPT

Mon Feb 21, 2005 5:25 pm

According to the Miami-Dade Aviation Department's assistant director of business development, Miguel Southwell, a South African carrier that wishes not to be named has commited to flying between Miami and Jo'burg, via Cape Town, by the end of 2006, with four weekly flights. The carrier is most likely either Interair South Africa or Nationwide. It would be great if it happened, but I still wouldn't get my hopes up until the first flight starts, though I can definitley see one of the two airlines leasing an A340 for the service.

The article also confirms SAA's intentions to start service to Washington, D.C. this year, and also talks about MIA's hopes of landing service to other points in Africa, such as Lagos.

I haven't heard any updates about them lately. Hopefully they will progress faster than Virgin America.

Here's something more from today's Miami Herald on Florida-Africa traffic:

• Florida is the third largest market for Africa-U.S. travel.
• There is currently no competitive Africa-Miami service.
• Miami can profitably support twice weekly Lagos-Miami round-trip service.
• Four times weekly South African Airways Johannesburg-Cape Town-Miami service would be profitable and carry 81,000 local South Africa-Miami passengers and 105,000 passengers overall.

why would they want to stop over in Lagos. don't they stick already to Sal airport in Cape Verde. Or is it that in nigeria they can get fuel at less cost ?

Hmmm - can't see SAA standing for anyone operating CPT-MIA except themselves - if its not SA, expect a brutal reaction from SA in terms of competing fares and possible relaunch of MIA or FLL.

Any update on Kenya Airways and MIA? Is KLM still causing trouble with the alliance they have with Kenya Airways?
