Braathens Aircraft Hit By Lightning During Landing

Mon Feb 21, 2005 10:36 pm

A SAS Braathens aircraft flying from Oslo to Kristiansand had to abort landing after being struck by lightening.

A witness says "I was terrified when I first heard the loud bang. We saw a flash in one of the engines, and then the plane suddenly started climbing steeply. Shortly after, the pilot announced that there had been a technical malfunction after the plane was hit, and that the plane would land at Stavanger - Sola instead of Kristiansand.

From Kristiansand Airport - Kjevik, they claim the situation was not dramatic, and that the plane was directed to Stavanger because they had more technical equipment there to look into the problem. The aircrafts instruments are not supposed to have been damaged following the lightening strike.

lightening srikes normally are not dramatic. I was on a KL 737-800 from ARN to AMS a few years back and we were hit on the way into AMS. I happened to be up in the cockpit door talking to the pilots at the time (this was pre-Sept 11) and when we got hit they just kind of looked a each other, ran a checklist, and proceeded as normal.
Golf Foxtrot you are cleared for departure

I witnessed a Do228 crash land after lightening disabled the elevators last winter. That was dramatic enough, but I suppose only a few cases of lightening strikes have a bad ending.
