Has Malev operated charter flights between Cleveland and Budapest?. I think I read this somewhere. It would not be surprising as there is a very large community of Americans of Hungarian origin in Cleveland.

I haven´t flown Malev but my best friend is from Budapest and has flown many times. It is a very good airline, its onboard service and especially the food of high standard. The B767 are confortable and clean inside, a high quality service.

I was in Budapest three weeks ago, Ferihegy airport is very modern and new. Although I flew KLM the check in was done by Malev, very friendly and efficient.

Enjoy

JFK-BUD

I also have never flown the route myself, but I have relatives that fly it quite often. They have mentioned that the service is excellent, the stewards/stewardesses being especially friendly. In case you're interested, the plane used is a 767-200.

One strange thing is that Malev does not actually get a jetway at JFK. Instead passengers board a hyraulically raised bus, which I affectionately refer to as "the box." This device then takes the pax to the plane.

Hi
i did not travel this route with MA but instead i had a couple of flights with them.
One on TU154 and one on a 737-200

The business class seats on the TU154 suck. Ohterwise the flights were quite O.K FA's were very friendly.
I think their Long range service must be even better.

Take care

Malev indeed operated a seasonal summer charters from CLE to BUD in the early 90s. They used a leased 767-300 on the route. But I am rather sure they no longer operate these flights.

I also have a Croatian friend who flies LHR-BUD with Malev. He said he thought the service was fine, but that all the in-seat phones had been removed!! (Didn't know they had them on Malev!!).

Hi!
I´ve flown Malev many times for many years, service was always above average (try the red wine!), BUD airport is quite good too, but beware of the taxi drivers in the arrival hall! Plane will be a 767-200ER (HA-LHA or -LHB), that -300 (-LHC) was only a short term lease.
Enjoy the town where I was born !

A couple of tips when in Ferihegy airport (Budapest):

Visit the observation deck located on Terminal 2A. It is very good, they only charge 100 Forint (less than US$0.50) and you get good views of the parked aircraft and tarmac.

Also about less than a kilometer when exiting the airport to your right there is a Malev museum. There are Malev aircraft preserved (IL18, Tu154, Tu124, etc) that you can also visit inside on some of them.

Enjoy one of the nicest places and the friendliest people in Europe.

I fly CVG-?-BUD two times a year, often on Delta/Malev. Malev uses 767's for New York flights. I would rate quality of service/comfort in Malev a bit worse then United, but noticably better then Lufthansa. Entertainment on Malev 767's is OK, but does not match LCD screens in every seat of United's 777.

BTW, taxi (minibus) service from BUD Ferihegy airport to the city is the best possible. For about $8 they drive you to ANY adress in Budapest. The airport is new and efficient.

The malev flight attendants are very nice but the seats and the food sucks. My flight was ZRH-PRG.
