Maybe, but I doubt it. Southwest tries to stay away from big, congetsted airports, so they don't stir up competition from the majors, and so they can keep their excellent on time record. I feel maybe Chatnooga or Macon could be a possibility, as they are not too, too far from the Atlanta metro area, but far enough as to not upset the majors.

Right now the closest thing to Atlanta is BHM, Bimingham. There are quite a few people that make the two hour drive to Birmingham to take advantage of Southwests cheap fares. But I dont see them going to Atlanta unless there is a secondary airport close to Atlanta that is opened up for commercial service. Right now ATL would probably be a nightmare with their scheduling.

I'll have to agree with the others and say that you won't see SWA in Atlanta anytime soon. There are a few reasons for this:

1) As said before, SWA isn't too fond of large, congested airports and ATL is certainly large and certainly congested frequently.

2) ATL is the hub for another low-fare carrier, Airtran. Not that SWA is afraid of Airtran, but I don't know if SWA is keen on the idea of going into the hub of another low-fare carrier. Airtran certainly can't compare to SWA, but Airtran has come a long way in the last few years and they have built up a pretty loyal following.

3) No gate space. Right now ATL is pretty full and there just aren't free gates lying around. Both Delta and Airtran continue expanding and filling every gate possible. So I'm not sure SWA would have enough gates.

The only way I see SWA entering the ATL market in the immediate future is via another airport. There has been talk of converting one of the old military bases outside of Atlanta into another airport, but so far that talk has gone nowhere. Someday SWA will come to the ATL area, but for now there are plenty of other markets SWA can enter easily.

Have to agree with the rest, ATL already very congested with delays for takeoffs as well as landings. SW doesn't have time to spend in the air in order to gain clearance to land. Secondary location is a possibility, but not really needed, so if it happens, it won't be soon.

You have to take Delta into account, with them having a fortress at ATL.

hehe! Atlanta! well i think SWA should look into a)Macon b)Marrietta(small but usable) c)Augusta(there best bet for a GA airport) or d)Savannah, the latter two being the most likely for there service. Personally i would like to see them head into Augusta, that would be cool.

On the subject of a secondary airport in the Atlanta area: several years ago there was a plan to make Briscoe Field in Gwinnett County a commercial airport. It has a 6000 ft runway, and already handles lots of bizjet traffic. The idea died due to protests of landowners in the Lawrenceville area. I think Greenville-Spartanburg (GSP) has a better chance of landing Southwest than the ATL area.
