First flight for the Airbus A320 program which was launched on March 23, 1984 was 18 years ago today. Four aircraft were involved in the flight test program. The first made its maiden flight on February 22, 1987 from Toulouse. Certification of the Airbus A320-100 was achieved on February, 26 1988. Deliveries commenced on March 26, 1988, to Air France. British Airways followed on March 31st .
I personally am absolutely amazed at how an airplane from any manufacture can go 18 years and still be selling strong. There have obviously been some new variants and modifications, but the basic A320 design has been flying for 18 years with no modifications. The 757-200 lasted a little longer, but in its later years the orders fell off quickly.
Just wanted to take a moment to share amazement for a plane and how its technology has stayed up to date in an increasingly competitive environment as well as see what others think. Did anyone out there think that this plane would still be selling strong after 18 years even though competitors have developed new planes?

If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!
