PIA To Go Pakistan-Houston Nonstop '06

Wed Feb 23, 2005 1:10 am

According to this article they plan on starting Karachi-IAH flights nonstop in March '06 with the 777LR. Interesting considering the reported poor loads. I'm still unclear as to if PIA gained 5th freedom rights on the MAN-IAH sector. Currently the flight is once a week due to the low travel season. I guess they plan on sticking around IAH to see how the route would perform nonstop.

Its interesting to see that PK and AI have both got plans for further expansion into the USA, at roughly the same time as each other...

Flying Belgian--I think its a mixture of both, more so the Pakistani population here--same as Air India. I wish we could land some trans pacific flights.

How long will this flight be in terms of operating time and will it take over SIA's SIN-EWR?

It is about 1000 miles shorter than EWR-SIN:

IAH-KHI = 8483 miles
EWR-SIN = 9534 miles

Just to let you know that "Paki" is a racial slur.

You mean like IAH-NRT that you already have?

>Just to let you know that "Paki" is a racial slur.<

That my Pakistani best friend uses all the time in a completely non-sluring way and has no problem with other people using as a shortening?

>why karachi ?<

Because it is the most important city in Pakistan

>I thought ISB was a more productive hub for PK ?<

Only because they make it so

Yeah--we get China Airlines via SEA--but its not great for spotting as it arrives and departs under the cover of darkness; but apparently the loads are pretty good. I don't see any new transpacific traffic for IAH on the horizon. With Korean codesharing from DFW I doubt they will move ops down to IAH. Continental is short in widebodies and with the new long haul flights being opened from EWR that means we'll see fewer 752s and widebodies as it is. Sidenote--Air France and CO are codesharing on IAH-CDG runs, we may see an additional frequency from CO and/or AF.

Not exactly... unless one intend to make it.
"why karachi ?

What makes you think that???

I believe it would be better for PIA to operate non-stop to NYC, Chicago or YYZ. Huston non-stop does not make a lot of sense to me.

It looks like that polar route does not have a very high ETOPS requirement as it crosses close to Scandanavia, Iceland and Greenland.

I am glad to see that PK is toughing it out in Houston. I thought for sure that they would not make it through '05'.

Flying Belgian,

Houston has the 2nd largest 'sub-continent' community in the US behind NYC according to local Indo-Pakastani groups.

This will never work out for PIA, especially since knowing their hopeless flight scheduling dept will not make the flight connect within a few hours (2-3) to the BOM-DEL-DAC-CMB flights both ways. They will make pax sit for 6-9 hours to catch the SAARC bound flights.

Instead of wasting time with nonstops to IAH twice a week, they should fly on a more competitive and demanding route such as KHI-LHE-JFK or KHI-ISB-JFK.

Emirates has officially TAKEN OVER the KARACHI Passenger market and PIA + everyone else KNOWS THAT...so why waste time and money when more yield and $$$ can be made out of LHE and ISB.

Well, now we have two Pakistanis arguing over whether paki is a racial slur...
Is that like calling me a cracker? I don't really mind.

Good for Pakistan- use those 7772LRs to their potential!

To finish it off...being called a "Paki" is a slur..as Pakistanian, I should know...

The reason why PK isn't doing too well on the ORD and IAH routes is because they really do not do good advertising. In fact, I was at my travel agent a couple of days ago, and they thought PK's advertising is horrible.

That being said, PK has great loads during certain periods of the year, in fact, sometimes one can't even get a cattle class seat.

PK don't take advantage of the fact.........1) their business class is amazing, maybe not on par with EK, but I would say 90-95% of EK's. 2) The Pilots, FAs speak Urdu (which is great for pax, especially for the elder ones who are traveling to and from Pakistan to the US), EK has a load of languages, but no fluent Urdu 3). With EK, one has to deal with transferring/connecting in Europe AND at DXB....with PK, there is NO transfering....thus much less hassle.. 4) Their business class is only $2100-$2400 from ORD-KHI!! That is CHEAP!!! Compare that to EK, and it is not even close...

if PK can bloody get their advertising done, they would be doing PHENOM!!!

I've flown EK a boat load of times to and from Pakistan, including JFK-DXB route (most of the time it was from either in LHR or CDG), and PK from ORD-KHI.....unless I'm making a pit stop in Europe, I much prefer taking PK over EK.

This new route aims to serve the large Pakistani community in Houston. There is no energy related business between Houston and Pakistan.

Pakistan is limited in natural recourses, and produces only 62,870 barrels per day.

I agree. Putting up some billboards around Houston’s Medical Center wouldn’t hurt. Although Houston’s economy was only energy for a long time, Houston also has a sophisticated health care industry as well. A Potential advertising target for this route would be Pakistani Doctors who go to work at the Med Center every day.

Houston has a huge Middle Eastern Community, The medical center alone has an abundant amount of hard working middle easterner's. Just look at Lufthansa, half of their flight is full of people going to the middle east, partially due to Oil the others just being from the middle east. I believe PIA would make a good profit flying to Detroit too.

But Canuck, Yank, Aussie, and Brit are fine.  Smile I too have associated Paki as being a racial slur so it would be wise not to use it in text... using it in conversations is safer because people can tell if you are using it in a degrading context.

Houston to Pakistan oil based business traffic can't be too big because it wouldn't make much sense... Pakistan is a net consumer of oil and so is the US. I guess there could be some traffic for related technologies but not enough to fill an aircraft. PIA must be gambling that they can attract the Pakistani community with direct flights although I have to wonder why they were not able to attract them before... how many alternatives are there between Houston and Pakistan?

Secondly, the Pakistani population in the US based on the census data is about 204 thousand. Houston's data indicates that it has an Asian population of 114 thousand total including those from China, Japan, India, etc. This compares to a Pakistani population of 74 thousand in Canada of which 50 thousand reside in the Toronto area. If Canada doesn't have the demand for a direct PIA flight to Toronto then I'm not sure how well Houston would do. I can't imagine that Houston's Pakistani population is 50 thousand since that would be almost as large as all its other Asian populations combined... which would lower the need for flights to China, India, and Japan if true.

A side question, wat are PIAs international routes and frequencies to Europe and Americas,

As regards their non-stop flight to Houston,i feel with their 777 LR product they can offer a very good challenge to EK and the others. All the best to them hope this route is the stepping stone for additional non-stops

I think you mean "unofficially" taken over.

"Officially" taken over would imply that the Government of Pakistan has designated them as a Pakistani carrier for routes ex-Karachi, which is not the case.
