And, I could be wrong. Nah. That would be twice in one year. I think, maybe.....

If not tonight, it could come by the end of the week. There has been speculation as the when it will be announced. I've heard Tuesday, Friday, anytime within an 11 day period ending this week, or by next fall.

Either way, if it's tonight it won't happen until 6:30-9:30 central time as stated above. And unless an employee that attends the Message comes on this board and announces the big news to everyone, you may not hear anything right away.

Could this be the "big" news?

After only a month on the job, retired Southwest CFO John Denison has been
appointed CEO at ATA. Denison was hired upon the recommendation of Southwest to make certain ATA was not only a good code share partner, but worthy of the LUV money being lent in Chapter 11.

um, appointing a retired CFO to a the CEO position of a company that you have code shar with and have purchased slots from isn't exactly earth shattering in the sense that "I will remember where I was when I heard the news!". It's got to be something bigger than that.

Doubt it...it was all over the wires several days ago... WN could have kept a better secret if this was it...If that is the major news, I'm even more disappointed than if them adding a city had been the news...

The pilot off of our inbound flight a moment ago said the "news" is that US Air and United either lost their mail contracts or that they quit their contracts and that WN is going to be carrying the mail from those contracts but that is still just a rumor until I hear "official" word.

yeah, but WN carrying the mail instead of US could be the big news. not as big as we were hoping for, should that be the case, but oh well.

edit: come to think of it, that isnt really earth-shattering news, so im inclined to doubt that is in fact the big news.

Hey called someone who spoke to the person who was there....there is NO big announcement. Someone even stood up and ask what the big news was and was told there is no big news. What a hoax and a huge rumor.

I imagine the folks at US would consider it fairly big news to be losing a mail contract to WN. Another proverbial in the coffin for them.

Well not everyone who knows about the rumor expected it to come tonight. Some said Friday, and I've also heard between now and next fall.

One thing I wondered about, and probably should have brought up earlier is why would it be announced at one particular Message to the Field? Don't all 5 Messages each year carry the same message? What would have been so special about Chicago's?

If it turns out we got all riled up for nothing, and then had our hopes dashed when we find out it was a rumor, it would be really funny if they turned around next week and announced ops to YHM (or IFE, or assigned seating, or one of the 15 other rumors we've heard)...

I imagine that something is going to happen in the near future, whether its growth, merger/aquistitions, etc. Besides, doesnt Gary Kelly have to grow the company 10% a year per his contract? On another note, I heard that in the last Check Airman meeting, Kelly said something along the lines of, " We cant be afraid to merge seniority lists" Possible merger talk?

Seriously doubt it... in fact, one of WN's rules is never grow more than 12% in a year, I doubt they would force themselves to maintain a certain growth level. Just completly contradictst the WN model.

Take this with a grain of salt, but the C-Check mechanics were told to leave their plane in the hangar this morning for Herb to use as a backdrop for a press conference. They were told by their supervisor that we were going to announce service to Mexico.

However, this is just one of many rumors I've heard, so I guess we'll see what is really going on tomorrow...

If indeed there IS a press conference, WN would probably throw a press release advising reporters of the time and place on PR Newswire, which you can monitor at http://biz.yahoo.com/ic/airlin.html. They likely would've done so at 0800 CST.

That said, I, too, am skeptical that anything is going to materialize.

Nothing exciting about mail and a former CFO taking control of ATA or even Mexico service. By the way it is described, it would have to be something really big and totally out of the box like a merger with AirTran or other large LCC or even a legacy. Maybe some deal for the B787 with the announcement in Chicago, maybe a major service change in Chicago? Maybe nothing but a bad thread starter too? Who knows, I am interested to see what happens and will be keeping an eye out just in case.

Mexico service would be a major departure from WN's way of doing business, so I'd call that a major announcement.

Let's see if it's actually for real, though - odds are it's not.

One quick comment on US Airways losing the mail contract. It brought in a pathetic $6 million a year to them...which is probably far less than it costs them to handle it. Not a big deal. Northwest told the postal service to take a hike awhile ago if you recall.
