WN To Open One More New City In 05...

Wed Feb 23, 2005 3:45 pm

Hi All--

Per Gary Kelly at the MDW message to the field tonight (2/22), WN expects to open one additional city this year. Kelly gave no indication as to when it would be announced/opened nor to what city it may be, saying that "that is often down to the last minute" referring to choosing a new city.

To all those who insist that COS is next, it was made very obvious throughout the message that COS is NOT going to happen. Several times during the video that was played, COS was mentioned, but never as a possibility...NO was definitely the message.

DC

PS...no "big announcement" tonight, but as mentioned in the other thread, while the message of that rumor, "You'll remember where you were", didn't vary one bit, the time frame did from source to source...some said as early as Tuesday, others as late as fall, so keep hopeing!!

There was talk of Charlotte, but isn't there a lack of gate space there?

My guess would be Charlotte, but as stated previously there is lack of gate space...Seems as though we are hitting US Airways major cities...First Phily then PIT...Be hard for me to believe it wouldn't be Charlotte, but who knows...And for the Love of god its not going to be COS, so forget it...

Does anyone remember Herb's commitment to RIC back in 2001? He told the city leaders there "we are coming." I believe that was after the ORF announcement was made.

The wait for RIC service was for the new terminal at MDW to be completed (a likely destination from RIC but lacked additional gate space at the time). Then 9/11 happened, a recession, and when the economy picked up there were some opportunities too good to pass up...PHL and PIT.

So IF another new city is added this year my guess would be RIC. Herb's word is good and he is still in charge of some strategic route planning I think.

Also, RIC would be a less costly city to open/operate. There is no competition from an entrenched legacy carrier with a large operation in place like PHL and PIT. So it would make sense for a second city this year.

I think RIC would take some of those pax who are driving to IAD for low fares on Independence Air too.

FAT...FAT..please be FAT. I doubt it will be, but I do hope it would be FAT. If FAT bagged WN and MX in the same year, that would be awesome. Plus, if F9 or COEX started service, it would just be gravy. Hopefully something like that comes to frutation.

What is the limit to the markets WN can serve in the US under the current operating model?
That is, how far off is it until Southwest must make serious changes, like other aircraft types, international flights, etc.?

I was looking at a map and maybe a dozen cities are left for Southwest to serve, but again, that's under current market conditions....

With that said, LET's SEE PHAT, I mean FAT!, followed by CAE, or CHS, or EUG, and maybe some more destinations out of MSY!

Newport News probably competes with RIC as much as IAD in the low fare market. Airtran flys 4x ATL, 3x LGA, 2x BOS, 1x MCO, and 1x TPA from Newport News. I think they are also closer to RIC than IAD is. 50 or 60 miles.

RSW...the terminal will open this spring and that puts Herb there in the fall.
RSW will then have 27 or 29 gates, room for Herb and the LUV gang.

Could it be a shocker?

Maybe someplace like GRB or RST or a city in Wyoming or Montana??

Someplace a little more off the beaten path, sort of like WN in the 'ole days.

While I would love WN to come to EWR or JFK or LGA, I doubt it will happen as operations would be difficult and expensive at those airports. While there are major cities WN doesn't serve at this time, like Denver, this is due to operational costs and structures not fitting into their business models. Guess we will all have to wait for the 'big announcement' from WN for a while longer.

Well, how about this one for a shocker:

WN to pay $X hundred million to US Airways to purchase a substantial majority of the latter's mainline slots and gate leases at DCA... Now THAT would make me fall out of my chair!

If MKE doesn't have WN, then GRB certainly won't get WN. MKE would be a decent location for WN if they had space left in the terminal, but they had to put USA 3000 check-in upstairs in the concessionaire area, so I doubt WN is coming to MKE.

There are close to 40 metropolitan areas that WN could concievably serve without changing their model one bit. I suppose 39 now that PIT is being added  Big grin

RIC is a safe bet IMO. But US status, and recent FL moves, might dictate an airport like CLT first.

Probably not, California/West has gone on the back-burner. With US dying on the vine, there are bigger markets and fish to fry.

Quoting KarlB737 (reply 13):

Maybe in 1978. They've been opperating out of LAX, LAS, PHX and other large airports for years. They pick alternatives when they are available, but when they aren't, they have no phobia of entering a competitive market.

WN would probably just wait until US was dead and they could buy those assets at auction if they actually wanted them.

I already told you all - WN is buying Greyhound, painting the buses canyon blue and operating them as their "Southwest Express" feeder service.  Big grin

I was at the OAK message and our work group had lunch with Gary before the message.
I remember RIC being announced by Herb and believe it will come to pass, but I really see CLT.
WN is going for the kill on US, so that is a logical choice.

Gary said at the message that they have no plans for LGA.

No they aren't. They're already dead. As PIT shows, WN can just do what they want and have their way with what were once US strongholds. Cherry picking.

You should also consider that WN doesn't want US to die, if a sudden vacume were to develop from a US liquidation, more of the US pie would go to carriers like B6 and FL. If WN keeps slowly encroaching on US while they are alive, they stand a better chance of securing more of US

Glancing at the route map a big gap is in South Carolina. I'm thinking CAE as it's in the center of the state, the capital, and easily accessible from GSP and CHS.

RSW has been speculated as well, but that would be a 20 flights-a-day market at best, long term.

COS of course is on EVERY A.netter's short list.

FAT, just because FATFlyer has been ACHING for it.

Now, some oddball choices:
SYR, ROC, BTV, PWM...given that WN seems hellbent on pushing US to the edge, though they'll never admit it.

DFW would blow everyone away, but WN is now actively calling the Wright Amendment what it is...antiquated anti-competitive BS.

SWF????? Sitting there untapped...and a logical market for the pre-PHL Southwest strategy.

And finally...STP. St Paul Downtown...wouldn't that drive NW nuts?
Next up: STL-CVG-MKE-MSP-STL.

LOL, not true.  Smokin cool In fact the last ocuple of years I have said that I think WN will stay focused for the near future on the east and some large cities that they have avoided in the past. It is too bad though, just as Fresno is starting to see good economic growth it is going to have to wait for Southwest.  Crying

I do hope they come to RIC. We are the largest market with neither a airline hub NOR daily flights on any low fare carrier.

I have to agree, RIC would not pull very much from ORF, but would be able to encompass much of western Virginia.. plus at RIC, the gates are available immediately.. whereas in CLT, there would be a big blowout if CLT decided to pull gates from US..

We have unused gates, unused counters, and a million bucks subsidy (essential air service grant) for any LCC to set up operations here.

(OK...ready for all the flames to be thrown)...I must be a complete moron. Would WN ever consider going to ATL? Aside from Nashville, Birmingham, and Raleigh, they don't cover much of the southeast with the exceptions of Florida and Louisiana. So why WON'T they move-in on DL's turf?

But I have a sinking feeling that CLT is going to be next on the hit parade.

Sorry, WN never served ANC. Your post implies that Southwest served this route, when actually it was dropped, as were several other cities, before the integration of Morris into Southwest. Southwest knew what cities and routes it wanted to keep before the buyout was finalized. There was even an article in Aviation Week and Space Technology about the cities that were being retained and how the routes were being realigned by Southwest.

Looks like RIC is the most likely candidate at the moment, unless something drastically happens to US.
Even if US goes bye,bye I can't see WN opening up any more stations straight away because places like PIT and PHL would have so many passengers beating a path to their door.

One other option, would WN consider setting up in IAD if Independence Air doesn't make it.

If WN really wants to get proper national coverage they are going to have to serve some real airports. The ATA codeshare is a great way to test the waters but I think Southwest are going to have to go into these cities that ATA currently serves with their own planes.
