JetBlue To Start JFK-PDX, Add 2nd Daily SEA-JFK

Thu Feb 24, 2005 12:05 am

http://biz.yahoo.com/pz/050223/73190.html

Beginning 5/17, JetBlue is opening up PDX. Good news for PDX, they've struggled to keep non-stop service to the east coast. Nice to see new service being added.

Haha, great minds think alike. I think PDX is a good addition, but I wonder if the SEA market can support so many flights, now that Delta has added service as well (soon to be switched over to Song, with even more capacity than the current 738s). Over the years, AA and UA have added and dropped JFK-SEA on and off...it seems to be a challenging market. It will be interesting to see whether JetBlue and Song will both be able to stimulate demand with their low fares and popular products, or if one will be forced "off the island," so to speak.

I wonder the same about the SEA-JFK market. This will be 2 daily for Jetblue, 3 for Delta/Song, and AA has it's 2 daily summer flights as well.

Then SEA-EWR you'll have 4 daily on CO and at least 2 on AS.

However.....way to go PDX. That flight will be very popular and I bet PDX sees more of Jetblue than SEA does once they see the market in PDX.

Great news for PDX! This will be a very successful flights for jetBlue.

In the future, American will probably eliminate its flights from New York to Seattle, effectively ceding all East Coast flying to Alaska. With one or two exceptions, AA simply isn't interested in competing in secondary transcon markets anymore.

With B6's recent expansion taking place at BOS, could BOS-PDX service not be too far behind?

Funny about the AA transcon, last night I had the joy of listening to an AA pilot whine and moan about AS flying SEA-DFW, after they entered the SEA-BOS, and SEA-ORD market, coming in on his beloved AA's turf. He was going on about how AA will be increasing services in SEA.

I wonder if this is his broken heart talking??

It was funny to listen to him. "How dare they fly to Dallas. arent we a code-share? Maybe we should start flying to ANC!!" I have so many comments to make.......

I haven't heard a thing about that. I will be flying into BOS on FL on March 11 (and then back to PHL on March 12) so I'll find out fairly quickly as towards whether FL will stay at Terminal D.

This is an interesting move for B6 to add another flight along with DL's huge song expansion. B6 does have one benefit though over song; they can connect people to upstate New York as well as florida. The prices from the west coast to smaller cities in New York are outrageous. 400 or 500 dollars might be as cheap as you can get to ROC or elsewhere without B6. My opinion is that the Song flights will stay empty because there isn't enough O/D to warrent that much service, and connections on song are limited. People would go on DL through a hub if they wanted to connect to a Song destination.

B6 has a following among college students and young people wanting to go to New York from SEA. The only thing that hurts them is the horrible timing of the red eye flight that doesn't make business flyers and others happy flying with B6.

AS and CO can do well also because in addition to O/D they have connection opportunities. AS can fly people to Alaska, Canada and around the Northwest, while CO goes to all over the east and to Europe. Both those carriers are solid. UA went from a 767 to a 757 to an A320 and then dropped it all together. They relied only on O/D since they had a presence but no hub at either location.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

And they're cheaper than AS when I looked at them into EWR...and now I don't have to go through SEA!!

AA has consistently reduced service out of Seattle due to the ridiculously high airport fees. SEATAC is out of control and with PDX a short hop away, I expect seeing it keep growing as SEA loses more and more service.

I remember when you could see AA's entire fleet in SEA in a single day, over 20 daily flights, nowadays, all MD80 except for the one 757 to JFK. No more BOS flights, no more NRT and down to only 14 daily departures altogether.

wow...i'm excited about this news!!! Finally SEA won't be all alone on our route map!  Laugh out loud also to its great to hear that SEA FINALLY gets a daytime flight after the last few years of it only being a red eye! PDX will be a great destination for our crewmembers too since we have quite a few that live in the OR area...easier commute for them to get to JFK rather than driving all the way up to SEA or catching another airline to get to work.

Of course, for one redeye flight, they probably won't have their own gate anyway, no need to pay for 24 hours of gate space for only one flight.

Padcrasher, those flights are once a day, and you can already connect to DL's international network. You don't need 3 flights a day for international connections. The two 738s fill that job fine, and do not justify doubling capacity. I was just saying that B6 is in a better position to increase service, not that DL should cut service. B6's new afternoon flight from SEA-JFK is timed to connect to the last set of flights out of JFK in the day.

Either a port gate on D or they will use one of UA's gates at PDX, as I believe UA has a contract with B6 to provide ramp/mx service at some or all of their locations. B6 operates out of the north satellite in SEA.

I knew it! I started a thread awhile back that talked about Neeleman's plans to open a new red-eye city this year...well here it is! I'm sure it'll perform well and hopefully we'll see BOS and IAD service in the near future.

Also, FINALLY they're adding a second flight to SEA...the destination has basically been deprived of attention from JetBlue, but I guess they decided it's time to step up the competition -- especially after Song's announcement.

Best of luck to B6!

Great news...

Isn't it true that the Port of Portland was insisting that new entrants commit to having their own dedicated facilities leased, rather than relying on space provided by another carrier via contract?

I seem to remember something coming up about that, and it being a barrier to new service. If that's the case, then B6 will probably end up on D, I'd imagine.

I have heard that as well but Big Sky just started and I believe their counter and ground service is handled by QX so I am not sure. It would make sense to me to have B6 on concourse C because of the many vacant gates, nicer facility and potential for growth. Off-topic, I recall somewhere on these forums that someone was predicting if B6 or someone else started PDX to New York or FL, AS would start something as well-we'll see?

Kwbl:

I agree that "C" is nicer. If UA's going to handle them, however, they'll probably opt for a "D" gate for simplicity's sake considering UA's operations on "E".

I hadn't thought about Big Sky, but you're right... although that's a little different because they're offering their flights to Moses Lake under an AS codeshare, as well. Maybe that's how they differentiate. I think the Port didn't want the situation where DL resells its unused space and facilites to new entrants instead of negotiating directly with the Port, since DL presumably got the leases at a lower rate when they were a bigger deal here.

I don't think we'll see AS respond with JFK service in this case. What I'd love to see is B6 add PDX-IAD before PDX-BOS, and see what UA does (after they run around screaming, that is).  Smile

Would love to see Jetblue add PDX-BOS and IAD as well. Too bad Alaska airlines once again has not seen PDX as a viable market for expansion to the east. Glad to see other airlines taking advantage great opputunity...Thank you JetBlue!

I have just one very very very tiny suggestion for B6...

Anyone see the image they picked for Portland in their "Our Cities" section of their website?

Now, to me, that's a pretty gloomy picture... too many clouds (especially considering today). Where's the trademark "Mt. Hood from Washington Park with Portland Skyline" picture that's popular?

Question.

How can we start BUR when it is so slot restricted, NIMBY's worse then LGB, and the runway is so short we couldn't do transcons? What a waste I think.

I say we announce SFO and LAX, why BUR?

I am kind of shocked myself, as I cannot see a fully loaded A-320 depart from that airport.
I really cannot see BUR-OAK or BUR-LAS either.

Congradulations B6! I knew PDX had to be on there.

From what I've read in the forums, SEA-JFK was begging for one more flight.

It will be interesting when B6 gets the E190's. What's the current estimate for new B6 cities in 2005?

Yeah, the Burnside bridge was a nice touch too I thought... although I gotta say (working one block from the Burnside) that the bums down there leave you alone at least, which is a far cry from the bums near Pioneer Square or some other places.

Regarding jetBlue in Southern California:

It seems a little puzzling to me why B6 would start yet another Southern California station when they only serve seven cities from their west coast hub. Why not connect the dots instead? DEN? SMF? MCO? Then again, perhaps the strategy is to minimize LGB anyway, since they're so constrained no matter what they do in terms of the number of daily flights.

No - JetBlue had initially said the E190s would be used East Coast only. They don't have the range to go transcon - my guess is that the middle of the country will start to see some JetBlue once the Embraers arrive.

BUR is a little surprising to me but I am happy for them. They are totally circling the LA area now! Good for them!

Interesting to note that CO has now bumped up PDX-EWR from the two planned flights this summer to three now. Just noticed that this morning.

Beginning June 9 CO will have:

CO 485 departing 8:00AM,
CO 585 departing 2:35PM (ex. Sat.), and
CO 685 departing 9:40PM

They only have two return flights, one at 5:35PM and 7:45PM in their schedule so far.

Suddenly, Stumptown is getting a lot of flights between PDX and the New York area.

That's quite a change for PDX-New York. As of today, we have one. This summer, we'll have four?

Clearly there's support for more service PDX-NewYork, but is there really a need for 600 seats per day in the market, up from 150? It seems a bit irrational.

For what it's worth, it could be to help feed NW flights at PDX. For instance, CO does offer an option to fly EWR-PDX-NRT, on one of the new flights. They don't publish options to HNL, however.

I wonder how this might impact any decision by AS to beef up NYC... I'd be very surprised at this point to see DL try anything with Song to PDX.

I just read in the Oregonian this morning. The POP will rent out gate and ticketing space by the hour. I guess this is a agreement the POP agreed upon to to lure more airlines into PDX. So most likley B6 will use their own Port gate. I bet they use one of the C gates down on the end.

A funny part of the article was this.

"Unlike Southwest, which operates a fleet of middle-age 737, Jetblue flies new A320."

So those 197 737-700's are middle age?

That's great news that the Port has started to see the light and be a little helpful. Not sure I see how the hourly thing will work, though -- if I only want an hour a day, do I get to decorate and outfit my ticket counter space like the other carriers have?

If the Port is really renting hourly, then perhaps us PDXers should get together and buy some time... along the lines of...
