Safety And The Impact Of Technology

Thu Feb 24, 2005 1:07 am

Aircraft have obviously been subject to all sorts of technological advances in previous years, both in operational and entertainment terms.

But to what extent have they made aircraft safer? Can anyone highlight a loss from yesteryear that one of the bigger passenger jets suffered, that technological improvement ensures wouldn't happen today?

Conversely are there any advancements that pose additional risks to aircraft? The reason I ask this is that I believe the wiring used for in-flight entertainment on board Swiss Air Flight 111 was cited as a potential cause.

The reason I ask is because the other day a group of us had an argument (albeit of its usual friendly nature) as to what really makes a difference to safety, procedure or technology. I am a great advocate of procedure.
