Spotting From Airside Of North American Terminals

Sat Feb 26, 2005 9:20 pm

Which airports in North America have good spotting opportunities from the airside of the terminal (secured areas of the terminal and concourses); where and why?

- NWA's new terminal at Detroit is excellent, good views through large glass windows
- the same with NWA's terminal at Minneapolis, there's a dedicated viewing area

Sorry, can't remember all the details about which runways the spots are facing. Just have a look at the terminal maps.
But be prepared for being treated like a terrorist. My binoculars apparently caused almost as much trouble as a machine gun...  Pissed

TPA has got spotting with no problems airside and from the Parkade (Carpark). And the best part is there is no harrasment. MKE is no problem either.

BWI, DEN, MCO, FLL, DFW all were ok for airside spotting. Only place I ever had problems with security people was DFW.

Terminal A and B at EWR have good views of the taxiways and runways. Because of the shape of Terminal C (the Continental terminal), the views aren't as good.

MHT has a really good spotting place on the third floor, it's like directly above the metal detectors and you don't have to pass through security to get there. Last time I flew out of there, it was a really clear day and I could actually see my mom in the viewing area from my seat waving at my plane while we still in the air

ORD terminal 5 was ok, but not brilliant. Good views of arriving aircraft and some views over the remainder of the airport. Had to do a bit of walking though.

Oh, and get your duty free BEFORE you go through security!!! lol  Big thumbs up

Cheers

LAS has nice spotting opportunities as well. Too bad it's not an extremely busy airport. Large glass windows that provide excellent views.

Spotting may be fine there, but photography is not. They chose to coat the windows with a material consisting of fine black dots, I guess to cut down on sun glare. EVERY window in that place has the same coating - except for the windows at the very ends of the terminal. I can only vouch for the north end, but those are the only plain glass windows I found in that entire terminal.

STL has fairly good spotting in Concourses A and C, in those sections parallel to the runways. If planes are landing/taking off to the west C is your best bet to catch them moving on the ground. A is good to catch them airborne after take off. If landing/taking off the the east, the reverse is true.

The windows are tinted.

New York JFK Delta domestic terminal gate area with fastfood restaurants window views very close to the runway. Had a feast one time with a CA 744 taking off!

MDT (Harrisburg Int'l) new terminal opened Sept 04, has a dedicated Observation area on the third level. This area has all glass facing the runway and is outside the secured area. Hard to shot through the glass but is a nice view from there.

My glass is neither 1/2 empty nor 1/2 full, rather, the glass itself is twice as big as it should be.
