VS 744 To Salina Kansas

Currently (2030z) there is a Virgin 747-400 enroute from JFK to Salina, Kansas, anyone know what that is about? I am sure it is not everyday that Virgin flies to Kansas. The flight number is 9935 so I am assuming it is a charter flight. Could it be for maintenance? Anyone have any info on this flight? Thanks

That's right, the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer has been at Salina for a few weeks. They have been waiting for favorable weather conditions, winds. Salina was chosen because of its location and it has over a 12,000 ft runway.
The only scheduled airline service that Salina gets is a Beech 1900 commuter.

Wow, I did not know anything about this program. This is really interesting. I wonder if Sir Richard is onboard the 744 enroute to SLN? Thanks for bringing this record attempt to my attention. I will be watching!

On that homepage (about the plane) it says:

The aircraft is so aerodynamically perfect, that the only practical way to descend is using drag parachutes.

How could that be true? Doesn't every object plowing through substance (like air) have Drag which slows it down, resulting in altitude loss to make up the speed lost? If that were true, it would be something like a perpetuum mobile, wouldn't it?

I think what they are saying is that the airplane is so clean aerodynamically, that to descend in a normal manner requires the use of a drag chute. The plane is not optimized for climbing, descending, or flying in the pattern; it is optimized for range and fuel efficiency.
