Aircraft Opinions

Sat Apr 01, 2000 7:04 pm

Last year I flew a Boeing 757-200. A beautiful aircraft, I think. The 747's are great-looking aircrafts too, except the SP. I think it's rather ugly, even if I love to see one, because it's so rare. Have you any opinions about how airliners look like? Please let me know

Thanks

I think that almost ever old a/c (dc9-741, dc10, 732 etc..) has very nice design.

does anyone know if AC will start service to DFW because of canadien and why did AC originally drop the service to DFW?

Purely based on aesthetics, using Jeremiah's format, favorite (runner up):

PRETTIEST:

Regional turboprop: Saab 2000 (Dash-7)
Regional jet: DO 328 JET (Avro RJ)
Small/medium capacity: A319 (F100)
Medium capacity: IL-62 (B757-200)
Widebody: 747-200, DC-10-30 (IL-86, A340)

UGLIEST:
Regional turboprop: Beechcraft C1900 (ATR-42)
Regional Jet: Embraer ERJ-145 (YAK-40)
Small/medium capacity 737-200 (737-600)
Medium capacity: B757-300 (no runner up)
Widebody: B777-300 (B767-200)

Looks can fool you. I think Airbus airplanes look ok but they really suck. I think 737s are ugly but fun to fly and good reliable workhorses. 727s, 757s and DC8-73s look the coolest in my opinion.

Ultimately, I'd have to agree on what I find alot of people think: The 757-200 is about the most beautiful a/c out there. Of course it's sibling, the -300, does not share it's beauty. The stretch just takes away from the pleasant shape of the 757. Some aircraft become more attractive with a stretch, like the 767(from -200 to -300;I don't like this new stretch of the -400), Saab 340 to 2000(very nice!) and DC-10 to MD-11, for example. Getting back to straight-foward looks, going either way is the A320 family. With the V2500s, they are very appealing, but with CFMs, the looks fade...

Best aircraft out there today is with out a doubt the B757. Sleek, streamlined and powerful this a/c is the corvette of any airlines fleet. For sure AA make theres look the best, all silver. Has anyone seen DL new colors that were unveiled in ATL this past week. They have changed them yet again.

Let's stick to Teahan's method:

Best looking

Regional: ERJ-145
Small: 737-700
Medium: 767-300ER (I know, the ERs don't look different, but the name is neater   )
Large: 777-200ER (same note)

Worst looking

Regional: 328Jet (4 engines on small aircraft don't look right)
Small: A320
Medium: 757 (love the airplane, but it looks like a flying pencil. I'm probably the only one who feels this way)
Large: DC-10
Bonus: A3XX (two words: Flying Watermelon)

Thanks for posting a topic where its just our opinions. I like to vent every once and a while.

I think that how good/bad an aircraft looks is just based upon the angle at which you view the aircraft.

Same theory with people: if you look at say, Barbara Striesand head-on, you may think that she looks pretty, but if she turns her head, you might think that she looks pretty ugly, unless you like huge noses...

The DO 328 jet does not have 4 engines!
You must be thinking of the RJ Family (RJ 70, 85 & 100)

Teahan,
Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, that was the aircraft I was thinking of. To me, it just seems weird having four jets on that small of a plane.

How about the 4 jets on the tiny Lockheed Jetstar?

Just a mini VC-10/Il-96!

From the aesthetics point my hit-list looks like this:

Best-looking are
Classics: B707 and VC-10
Regional: RJ85 "Jumbolino"
Shorthaul: B737-NG (shorter versions like the new Lauda Air plane)
Medium: No favourite (if any then it´s the A330-300 but thats almost a longhaul aircraft, or the Concorde)
Longhaul: B747-400, the best-looking aircraft of all time

Worst-looking are
Classics: DC-8 (only Stretch-versions, the original shorter ones are nice)
Regional: ATR 42 and Shorts
Shorthaul: MD80
Medium: B757-300
Longhaul: B777-300 (The flying "Dick", the worst looking widebody of all time). An example that a pretty aircraft like the 777-200 can be turned into a piece of crap.

By the way, FlyUAL777, you made a good point mentioning Barbra Streisand! The 777-300, condemned by me, does not look bad from every angle. Only the sideview is competely out of balance. If some people don´t like the 747SP ´because it´s stubby (to me the SP looks like a fat baby, somehow you still have to like it) , the 777-300 is definitely too far stretched. Flying vibrator, that.

That 747 is on approach to SXM. It is a VERY popular place for spotting, as they land over the beach. The sight is fantastic.

RE: Aircraft Aesthetics

Nice:

RJ: CRJ (100 or 200 - you've got to love the pocket rocket look)

Narrowbody: 727-200 (nice sleek and sporty trijet)

Widebody: A330/340-300 (330 with RR Engines - full length nacelle - very sleek and gracious looking). Interesting, despite having the same fuselate as its A300/310 forebrothers, how it looks so much better!

Not bad:

Narrowbody: A320 Family (except 321 - too long. V2500's naturally. 318 will look silly)

Widebody: Lockheed L-1011 Tristar (looks a bit fat, but that second engine is integrated very nicefully into the body. Longer models look best)

Not good:

Narrowbody: MD-80, DC-9 (not terrible, but not terribly pretty either)

Narrowbody: 757 (too skinny, looks like it's a pencil. -300 is just too long - like a flying chopstick)

Widebody: DC-10/MD-11 (I know I'm in the minority here, but the second engine is very ugly - as if it has been thrown there. Plus the nose isn't very attractive.)

Cheers,

Justin
